There are 2 actuators, one controls the transfer case, the other controls the front axel. If you have an assistant, you can tell which one isn't doing it's job by looking from the outside under the truck and see if the front drive shaft is turning when the truck moves. If it does then it's the axel actuator which is located on the right side of the housing, if it doesn't turn, it's the transfer case that's the problem. (If that's the case, then be sure of the problem as it could be number of things associtated with this system and can be very costly guessing). The best way to find out why the transfer case isn't engaging is with a good scanner and read the system's controller.

Passenger side at end of axle losse inside rotor is loose on bearing and flopping inside with wheel off will just a bearing fix this


most likely it will be just the bearing, unless someone has driven it this way for prolonged time in this case it might need other parts as well such as a new axel, or even a rotor. if it has been the case then the axel nut that holds the axel in the bearing has gotten so hot the chances of loosining it up will be verry slim and verry hard to remove, thus damaging the axel nut threads. if nit is this loose, I would expect to replace the bearing and the axel.

GMC '91 Jimmy, Transfer case. When in two wheel drive I hear a slight grinding noise and rattling noise. When in 4 wheel no noise. 330,000 miles, could something be worn? What keeps the transfer case gear...


Remove the transfer case and strip it down,wash it out and replace whatever is worn.
330,000 miles is unrealistic
Your chain is worn and stretched for sure, and rattling and may be cutting into the case.
Don't install another salvage yard unit, unless you can not repair yours. Then strip down whatever you purchase, and go thru it also.

Where is the actuator switch located on the transfer case?(the switch that engages the 4wd)Thanks!


The actuator solenoid along with the axel solenoid
switch are located at the rear of the front axel on the
right side.And the transfer case switch is located on
top of the transfer case left side. Hope this helps.

How do you remove the drive shaft from a 1992 Geo Tracker?


for 4X4 there are two drive shafts one to the front axel and one to the rear they are bolted to the axels with four bolts and four nuts undo those and gently wiggle the driveshaft from the transfer case. make sure it is in park it makes it easier...

for 2 wheel drive same thing for the rear just wiggle it from the transmission there is no transfer case. just as a warning some gear oil or tranny fluid might leak if the car isnt level

check fluid level, check the transfer case linkage on driver side of transfer case for damage /wear or in need of adjustment

Is it auto push button. If so there are more probles could be than just one.(push button) blown fuse, now power to the switch, no power to the vacume accuator or vacume. mabe differnt size tireds, but chances are good that its a vacume proble,

Check the solenoid at the front axel. This is a rather common prob. First check that power is at the axel, got power, clean and put it back. Please do not even look at the tranfer case! At worst you may need to replace the axel solenoid! Frankster016
