Pretty big job but has to be replaced asap. The fumes/vapors from the heater core will eventually come though the registrars and make you sick and mentally affected. If the floor board is wet under carpet, inside front windshield has oily, hard to get off residue and/or sour bittersweet smell; it's already affecting you if you spend much time in the car. Headaches, blurred vision, anger, dark circles under eyes. The heater core going bad is a common thing for Lincoln Towncars. It will cost around $600 to have repaired and about 6 hours. Also FYI, intake manifold recall for repair has expired for most Towncars but it should be looked at for leaks. The factory installed plastic gasget warps.

if they have replaced it 3 times and still can't get the leak stopped
A. It not the heater core something else is leaking

B. there using a used heater core (which is my opinion is plain . . stupid)
C. the mechanic has no idea what he doing
First thing they should have done when car was brought in the 1st time was check for other leaks if it is the heater core still leaking the mechanic is installing it wrong or not geting hoses tight. the actual changing of the heater core takes only about 10 minutes and actually a easy process that anyone could do. What takes the most time is getting to the heater core because the majorly of the time the whole dash has to come out which takes hours

I would take your car somewhere else and have it fixed right and have them bill the dealership for the repairs

the dashboard will have to be removed along with other components that are blocking you from accessing the heater core once you get to the heater core its a easy replace. if it is leaking in your car you can bypass the core until you can get it fixed by removing the two hoses going into the heater core and connecting them together with any piece of hard tube that can withstand the temperature of the coolant

got to replace heater core first try a cheap method buy some aluminum seal or bars leak put in radiator might fix problem for a short while need to replace heater core or possible hose leaking.

Heater core leaking


When the heater core leaks engine coolant, the sure way to fix it is to replace the core. It is a small raidator made much like the engine radiator. You can try radiator "Stop Leak". If it is a very small leak you may get lucky with the stop leak for a while. Sooner or later the core will need replacing.

It sounds like you probably have a leak in your heater core. Replacing a heater core can be a difficult job. If you decide want to try it I suggest you get a shop manual to help you out. I can give you a relatively easy temporary fix that will stop the leak until you have more time to fix it or you can take it into a shop to have it done. The down side is this fix will temporally disable your heater. Wait for the engine to cool. Open the engine compartment and look all the way in the back between the engine and the firewall. Find the 2 heater hoses that pass through the firewall. They should be about 1 inch in diameter. Undo the hose clamps and disconnect them from the firewall. Get a short piece of metal tubing about the thickness of the inner diameter of the hoses. Use this metal tubing to connect the heater hoses together and clamp them using the two hose clamps. Now the antifreeze that would normally circulate through your heater core will instead circulate through this loop and not enter the passenger compartment. If you can't find a short piece of metal tubing to do this fix you can completely remove one of the heater hoses. Then take the other heater hose and connect it to location near the engine where you disconnected the first hose. Save the first hose so you can hook it up later when you do the more permanent fix. Make sure to position all hoses such that they aren't resting on any hot surfaces. I hope this advice helps you out.

How to remove the heater core


If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.

  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

Rear heater core line leaking, can I fix w/ rubber hose and clamps? The leak is right below drivers side door. There are four lines that run to rear heater core but only one is leaking.


yeah hose and clamps are the cheap easy way to go there, or if your lucky, the leak is right at the spot where the hose meets the metal and you can just cut the end off and put it back with the old clamp

98 Lincoln TC,Cold starts fine ,runs good until warm, then shuts off. No codes,Cranks ok, have spark, PATS ok. No fuel pressure, cant hear fuel pump prime,New Fuel relay. jumped fuel pump - works. I do not hear fuel pump prime up, do not have fuel gauge, but pressing on valve in fuel rail- no pressurized fuel. Fuel regulator seems ok, not leaking / vacuum line dry as a bone. If I let it set for 15 min , it will start up again, but for a few minutes then dies out. If I let it set overnight it starts up perfectly and runs until operating temp is reached then stalls/stumbles, and shuts down. Vacuum is good while cranking, even with no start, Checked Inertia switch in trunk, it is not tripped. I have seen Ford TSB summaries' that mention issues like this , but I am not able to see to description. A point to add, the MAF sensor was cleaned, then I decided to replace it and did not make a difference. I do not have any stored codes, and the PATS is working fine, typical 2 second flash from and once key is inserted a 3 second steady light, then disappears. I have seen the TSB mentioning C103 Connector, it looks fine, I swapped out fuel pump relay with ac relay, still no difference.mention of wires around battery, do not know where to start. in dash service engine light and odometer is normal, seen other posts the say they only have lines, but mine is ok. the start of all of this , I washed engine with regular garden hose, ( not using pressure washer).also in the mean time, rear window defroster stopped working as well, can not say for same reason, but a mention.My problem started after washing engine. this is one of four Panther platform vehicles I owned with exact 4.6l w code engine, which I rinced down before. The only sensor I can think of is Oil pressure , or a corroded wire
