Hi, I have a 1997 Toyota Camry. The driver's side outer door handle stopped working, so I bought a replacement, took the inner panel off, and removed the old one. I discovered then that the handle itself is fine. It appears that whatever the latch control rod is supposed to connect to on the latch/lock has broken away, meaning that the control rod is no longer operating the latch. I have looked on the internet but cannot seem to find any info on what the part in question is or if I can even replace it. Any ideas?
On the rod in question hooks to a plastic holder that pops into a round hole on the latch. you should be able to look at the latch and see a round hole where the plastic keeper for the rod has fallen out look for this plastic holder in the bottom of the door usually that's where this plastic keeper falls. if you cant find it go to Toyota service desk and let them know that the rod has fallen out of the latch and you don't know what you call it. I believe if you ask the service person will come out to look at the latch and they will actually show you where the rod hooks up. and if your missing the plastic keeper they can write what you need and then while your there go to the parts dept and see if they have that part you need to put back into the latch should be a round hole in the latch where the plastic keeper will go. if you still cant figure it out go back in to Topeka Toyota and ask if they would come out to show you where it goes. if they don't want to help you then see if they can print out a picture for you that shows the latch and where the rod goes. all else fails go to the library and find a automotive manual for your car on door latch and handle. I also bet that you can go onto u tube and search for what you need to show you where that plastic keeper goes and where the rod hooks up we as mechanics can tell you how to do this and that but if you don't have a mechanical understanding of what we are telling what to do step by step to fix your problem it may be hard for you to understand. and that's understandable so I hope this will give you some more options for you. let me know if I can help in any way. god bless you steve
It is a plastic piece that usually comes with the new handle. It is something that I believe that you can go to your local auto parts store and pickup off of the dorman line. Ask the counter person for help.

Two 10mm bolts, or nuts, hold the handle on from inside the door. dont forget to remove actuating rod from old handle. probably clip is broke also.
SOURCE: Driver door handle of 2000 handle broken in half
FIRST YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE INSIDE PANEL. AFTER DOING THAT, WITH THE WINDOW ROLLED UP REMOVE 2 PLUGS ON THE METAL TO ACCESS THE TWO NUTS THAT HOLD ON THE OUTSIDE HANDLE. WHEN REMOVED, YOU CAN UNHOOK THE RODS THAT ACTUATE THE DOOR RELEASE. THE INSTALLATION IS THE REVERSE. I HOPE THIS HELPS. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO KEEP ME POSTED. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, JUST ASK. GOOD LUCK
SOURCE: broken door handle
Yes, if it is actually really broken you can look for and aftermarket door handle or go to the dealer (which will be more money of course!).
There are many aftermarket dealers of door parts all over the web, just take your time!
I bought my own chrome door handles for a old muscle car I drive and it was approx$35 total for both door handles chrome and beautiful and the door locks with fittings and 2 keys!!!

you can take a screw driver and pry it off. Be careful if you have power windows, if it falls right off then it could pull the wires loose. The panels have clips that clip to the door. Therefore, the only way to get the panel off is to pry it off.
