Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder

1 Answer

97 eclipse Hi I have a 97 eclipse spyder and it has some weird transmission intermittent problems.I will first start with it always hesitated going in forward gears, but would always go in reverse.it has flare up shifts from 1-2,2-3 shifts.but sometimes it don't and shifts fine.now it started not wanting to move in forward gears only reverse but eventually u keep playing with it ,it will go when engaged it doesn't slip or anythingcar only has 97000 miles on it but it has a remanufactured transmission in it so transmission doesn't have very many miles on it.I changed fluid and filter pan was spotless inside and oil was clean.I tried running a computer on it but it says no communication on transmission side.I can read engine side but no codes in there and no check engine light or codes on engine side.I thing transmission computer is bad but confused me when it didn't go in forward gears at all but it does work and don't slip I figured if it was internal it quits it quits not comes back and works its all intermittent but don't want to buy parts if I don't have to.what u think.

Starting in about the mid 1980's automatic transmissions changed from fluid shifting to electronic shifting. In other words, your shift is by an electronic solenoid controlled by the computer. There is no Shift cable gong to the transmission. Just wires. You need to look for a loose or dirty electronic connection to the transmission.

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem

I have a 95 Eclipse and I recently had to change out my TCU........ Transmission Control Unit, This should be located directly beneath the center console. First I would have the transmission services if problem persist then proceed to changing out the TCU you can get off of ebay. As far as i know there should be 3 Computers in our cars. 1 the Electronic Control Unit located behind radio 2 Transmission Control Unit located under center console and 3 Airbag Control Unit located under hood, Hope this helps.

SOURCE: where the fuel filter is located

It is located on the passenger side frame. Look for the fuel tank fill tube and then crawl under your car. It is in front of the rear tire on the passenger side of the frame. Should be 2 bolts holding it there, and when you tighten it back up don't tighten too much, you will break the bolts.
Good luck and hope this helps.

Why is there intermittent 'no start'?

If key is worn or chip contacts are loose this can happen--also a bad ignition switch.

You should be able to grab it firmly from the bottom-front-center of the seat, slightly yanking both forward and up, it should pop right off.

Probably the wave spring washer which is a common failure on these transmissions. Check the pan for metal parts if this happens. You'll have to replace it if so, but make sure they use the updated, thicker washer (part # 2741A007).

At traffic light and car wouldnt go forward but

You'll have to find the source of the leak to find out what went bad. It almost sound like a line going to the transmission cooler, but you could have a hole in the transmission casing. See if you can put it on a jack and figure out where it's leaking from.

Manual transmission!

Hi hotglass04. Your transmission will need to be rebuilt, or as you say, screwed. You can drive it home, just be sure to avoid all areas where you may need reverse, park out in the open, for instance. I feel you can drive it for as long as you have to, just stay away from trying to shift into reverse.
