Fuel gauge on my xl independence does not work

If your fuel gauge is not working, there are several potential reasons for this issue:
1. Faulty Fuel Sending Unit:
-The fuel sending unit is a component in the fuel tank that measures the amount of fuel and sends signals to the gauge.
2. Faulty Gauge or Instrument Cluster:
- The gauge itself or the entire instrument cluster may be malfunctional. Electrical issues, such as a blown fuse, could also be a factor.

-Broken or damages wiring between the fuel sending unit, gauge, and instrument cluster can disrupt the communication and cause the gauge to malfunction.

5. Fuse Problem:
-A blown fuse in the vehicle's fuse box could disrupt the electrical circuit that powers the fuel gauge. Consult the vehicle's manual to locate and check the fuse related to fuel system.

If your fuel gauge isn't working , it's not a fuse ! The gauge or the sending unit in the fuel tank is bad . If you had other thing's not working in the instrument cluster I would say probably a fuse. There is not a fuse just for the fuel gauge . Gas gauge readings are controlled by the sending unit on the fuel pump. I do not believe there is a separate fuse for any particular gauge. In order to fix it, you have to remove the fuel pump from the gas tank, determine if the float is stuck or the sending contacts are out of alignment or dirty. Some can be repaired, but most are not serviceable. Remedy: replace the fuel pump and sending unit assembly. I would first inspect the wiring from the fuel pump connector(s) to make sure you have good connection and wire integrity.

Hello graytape, was the fuel gauge and low fuel light working and then one day just stopped working?, if so, you have probably blown a fuse and you should be able to locate what fuse and where it's located in the owner's manual.
If you recently got the vehicle and then you found out that the gas gauge and low fuel light doesn't work then that is something completely different.
without knowing the year of the vehicle I can only give you an educated guess.
Many vehicles have a float in the gas tank and this float is directly linked to what you see on the gas gauge. However, after a number of years the floats get saturated from the fuel and become heavy, heavy enough to where they don't float anymore. That is one of the most common causes of the fuel gauge not working.
The sensor that activates the low fuel warning light may be independent of the fuel gauge and the fuel in the tank isn't low enough to turn it on. Your tank has to be very low to activate the low fuel warning light.

FUEL GAUGE FUSE IS THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CONTROL FUSE WHICH WOULD BE IPC BFC AND ACC FUSE.YOUR PROBLEM IN THE FUEL TANK.YOUR FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT NOT WORKING. PROBLEM NOT FUSE BECAUSE YOUR FUEL GAUGE IS WITH THE WHOLE CLUSTER CIRCUIT.IF FUSE BLOWED NONE OF THE GAUGES WOULD WORK.

If this is an intermittent problem,
remove the IPC 10A fuse in the fuse box under the hood,
not in the fuse panel by the driver side door,
for 5 minutes.
The electronics will reset.

cooling fan has a relay. check it first. Then check the ECT, Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. It is on the engine and sends a signal to the PCM, Engine Computer.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Cooling Fan, Electric WARNING: WHEN WORKING IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, STAY CLEAR OF THE FAN BLADE. BECAUSE IT IS ELECTRIC AND TEMPERATURE SENSITIVE, IT CAN START AT ANY TIME IF THE IGNITION IS ON.
The electric cooling fan is an electro-drive type. Its operation depends upon engine temperature and ignition switch (11572) position. If engine coolant temperature reaches 97°C (207° F) and the ignition switch is in the ON position, the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor) (12A648) sends a signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) which turns the engine cooling fan motor (8K621) and fan blade assembly on. Because it cannot operate unless the ignition switch is ON, the engine cooling fan motor and fan blade assembly does not operate after engine shutdown. The fan control relay (FC relay) is located in the LH front corner of the engine compartment, between the battery (10655) and the headlamp assembly. Circuit protection is provided by a 30A fuse labeled COOLING FAN in the main fuse junction panel to the left of the battery. If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, an additional relay is installed in the circuit. The A/C clutch control relay (19D572) bypasses the engine temperature portion of the circuit. The bypass circuit allows the engine cooling fan motor to operate whenever the A/C switch is engaged.

Fuel Gauge

1. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to the procedure in this section.
   

1. Using a jumper, connect the battery positive terminal to the fuel gauge "+" terminal and the battery negative terminal to the fuel gauge "-" terminal.
   

1. Connect one lead of a Rotunda Instrument Gauge System Tester 014-R1063 or equivalent to the "F-U" terminal of the fuel gauge (9280), and connect the other lead to the "-" terminal of the fuel gauge.
   

1. Adjust the instrument gauge system tester to the resistances shown in the illustration.
   
   
   
   
   

1. If the fuel gauge does not operate as specified, replace the fuel gauge. If the fuel gauge is OK, return to the Pinpoint Test.
   

Fuel Level Sensor

1. Remove the fuel level sensor (9275). Refer to Section 10-01 for the removal procedure.
   
2. Measure the resistance between terminal A and terminal B of the fuel level sensor.

1. If the resistances are not as specified, replace the fuel level sensor. If the fuel level sensor is OK, return to the Pinpoint Test.
