HI, you are describing classic high tension circuit breakdown, renew spark plugs and fit new HT leads, good luck.

I would try plugs and wires next. It's a cheap next step. The fact that you say when it warms up it's fine makes it tricky. If you're in real cold weather (below 0) the oil may not be circulating but I really doubt that's the problem.

Start car and use a squirt bottle of water to wet the wires and coil, if you see it spark or run rough one or both are bad, repair the wires first as they are more common.

This mercury is a 1994 V8 equipped. It sputters and and backfires through the breather like it would if it had a carb. It does this for miles even after prior warm up.

I'm having the same problem it sputters and backfires between 0 and 30 then just kicks in and acts normal recently did tune up. Any suggestions? Mine is a 94 grand marquis with a 4.6l v8

1997 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 155,000 miles, excellent cond. Has an A/C problem. After not running for a long while (like overnight), the A/C at first puts out cool air, then after 4 - 5 minutes, no more...

You can try a low pressure switch. I have had to replace several, one in a 1994 Crown Vic with 161,000 miles. I used gauges too, but I think like any electric switch the contacts get dirty and they get less dependable.
You just remove the electric connector, unscrew the old part and reinstall the new one.
