There is one detail (thing) in your car, wich controls gasoline suppling to engine. i don't know how it is called in english, but approximatly it can be called as electric regulator of fuel, because it controls how much fuel should be supplied to engine when the transmission is on neutral position. AND WHEN THIS DETAIL goes wrong (for example: by the reason of mess) fuel suppling is not correct (less then it is nesesarry) and engine is not able to work properly.
In my oppinion this can be the reason.
hope it will hepfull.

2002 vw passat epc light comes on and when slowing down engine shuts down showing code 0322 what is my problem

Code P0322 states: Ignition/ Distributor Engine speed input circuit NO SIGNAL. the sensor is on the left side(as you sit in the vehicle) of the engine block near the transmission flange. Know this, codes do not tell you if the part is bad necessarily just where to look. Wires and connectors can fail too. I don't know how to test this sensor without a scan tool, the good kind. Which i don't have.

I have a 2005 VW Passat TDI140 and recently it started tripping to low power when towing my caravan. Switching the ignition off and on reset the problem. However it repeated say 6/7 times during a 200mile...

However you have not mentioned the miles done on your Passat. If you have done the sceduled mandatory service the engine must not loose out on power when given a larger load. However it seems as advised that when the load is required your turbo seems defeated not giving out the extra power. If possible you must take a second opinion if the turbo action can be checked with a lesser cost of service. Also please check on your caravan wheels for any signs of drag, check on tyre pressures, check on fuel type used. Hope I could help. Good day .

99 PASSAT 1.8T HOW CAN YOU TELL IF THE TURBO WORKS

The turbo will be in-line with you air intake/ fliter sys. You should be able to hear it spin and move air with the hood up. Most likely, if you have a scan tool, you can plug it in to the OBD2 under the wheel on the dash, and the tool should let you know exactly how it is performing.

Engine swap

Generally it is not recommended using parts either that the ones designed for same model, however some Passat engine connects same way as Golf. You need to know the Passat engine year and verify engine mounting procedure and connections positions. Getting the two Haynes manuals for the two VW models can help you to compare.
