Question about 2002 Dodge Intrepid

2 Answers

My 2003 Dodge Intrepid seems to want to overheat when it is very hot outside and i turn on a/c. I replaced the thermostat, new radiator fluid and sensor but still tends to overheat. The car sometimes does not want to start and the temp gauge jumps to the H when i turn on the ignition, and there is no juice in car. I mess with the automatic windows and locks then the thing turns on.

I had the same overheating problem with a 2002 R/T model. Turns out there is a small bypass opening above the thermostat. It's a small hole and can get clogged. You can try air pressure to blow it out, or better yet stick a long wire in there and fish around. It should knock out the blockage.

The problems are totally unrelated...Replace the radiator ($140-200) is the ONLY fix for the heating issues. Don't forget to add water pump lubricant from NAPA, called #13.
Good Luck with the electrical stuff

My 2003 dodge intrepid depleted fluid and I was told it was a sparkplug. I have new radiator and resivor. It was running hot.

It definitely was not a sparkplug. It is either the water pump, thermostat or clogged heater core.

How to replace thermostat on 2003 intrepid 2.7 liter

Find the top radiator hose. Move away from the radiator to the engine block. Where the hose connects to the engine block that is where the thermostat is.

How to replace thermostat on 2003 intrepid 2.7 liter

Why do you need to replace thermostat.? Is it not getting hot enough via the heater,or is the engine water boiling? Its usually at the end of the bottom hose nowadays, youll see a round housing, two or three bolts.Drain the water first,or undo the bolts, engine cold, and catch the water.Replace with an original thermostat, and double check the sealing ring is in place on the new one.Refill radiator.Run engine, check water level later, with heater on hot

You either have a thermostat or water pump problem. car is getting hot. Check to make sure you have no water leaks on the hoses or radiator. to check the thermostat, run the engine for awhile to get it hot and touch the upper radiator hose to see if it is hot . If so then the thermostat is working and the problem would be the water pump. hope this will help you.

check first if you are loosing water or cooling fluids on your radiator. There may be a leak or the radiator cap may no longer prevent the steam from escaping. check the radiator fans if they are turning. You can check the fan if it is working by removing the temp sensor at the lower radiator hose. The fan should turn on by then.

Radiator fan not turning on 02 intrepid

maybe the sensor that turns on the fans might of gone bad . . and turning on the ac when engine is gettin hot is not going to help instead turn on the heater to reduce the heat , also overheating causes hoses and gaskets to get soft and get destroyed

2004 dodge ram is over heating, the thermostat and fan clutch have been replaced.Doesn't(over heat) in cool weather, but will in mod. weather if driven over 70mph or hilly terrain due or increase of rpm,and...

Water pumps can stall out, but do you have air trapped in system.
Had you recently had the system "open" to replace hose, thermostat, temp sensor. Some Ford and GM have a bleeder screw on a high point in cooling system to bleed out trapped air.

Check your trans fluid color. Since the trans cooler is built into radiator (automatics)

IF the engine is overheating the trans CAN overheat
IF the trans is overheating the engine CAN overheat

They share the same cooling source and trans fluid gets hotter than oil, but yet it has a wimpy cooler built into radiator. Maybe add trans oil cooler to system.

Also outside temp affects the cool down rate of the radiator, ie...hot air trying to cool down hot radiator/engine is less effecting than cool air cooling hot radiator/engine
