1991 Cressida How do i know if my alternator is bad?

if the alternator is not charging , there will be a red battery light on the dash
reasons for engine stopping are
broken timing belt/chain, cam/crank position sensor failure
immobilizer activation
ignition control module failure
run the fault codes as some engine lights only light up for urgent problems that require you to stop the engine

Check engine light is on

The check engine light could relate to something else - not your battery or alternator.

If your battery isn't charging from the alternator an illuminated battery symbol would appear.

It could be many things - low oil level, low coolant level, low windscreen washer fluid level. It could even be an electronic 'fault' - which a computerised diagnostic check would identify.

If the battery warning light is illuminated the first thing you should do is to check the tension of the alternator belt. You say that a new battery and alternator have been fitted? Take it to an auto electrician - he should identify any fault within minutes.

Battery light keep flashing up saying there is a battery charge fault it is a new battery and the alternator has been checked and seems fine

What make , model an year vehicle ? Most all vehicle have computer controlled charging systems (after 1996 ) May have a DTC - diagnostic trouble code stored ,an doesn't mean check engine light will come on . May be in BCM - body control module .

Alternator not working

What is year--make--model of vehicle? I'd check alternator connections to and from alternator. Check battery and battery connections. Check for charging system trouble codes, see if any?

2004 Pontiac Montana -brand new battery, new alternator(not rebuilt). have to jump start and runs for a while then dies some times wont take charge. battery will die not running in a day. very intermi

First, you can't and shouldn't test an alternator by disconnecting the battery cable while the engine is running. You run the risk of cooking the alternator and the computer. Thats how we used to test generators back in the last century.
Is the check engine light on when the engine is running ? Is the battery charge warning light on ?
There should be a fuseable link between the alternator and the battery that could keep the alternator from charging the battery.
The ignition module would have no effect on the charging system.

did you have the alternator tested on the car? the alternator may be good but the wiring to it may have a fault, have some one do a charging test on the car, if it still shows that the it is charging have them do an AC current test it could be that the diode is out in the alternator which would cause the light to come on and also the battery to drain when the engine is off. If it is not charging on the car suspect the plug end on the alternator ( we see them fail alot ). there is also a charge fuse might check it. The charging is controlled by the BCM ( body control module). If no charge and plug and wiring are good , fuse is good , suspect BCM......GOOD LUCK

If it's charging properly, and the cables are clean and tight, your problem is likely the battery, which i am assuming is 5 years old now. If it's not charging 14 amps, then it's the alternater.

If the regulator in the alternator has no feedback from the battery voltage, it will overcharge the battery OR the alternator is faulty. If the alternator is spun and a 12volt current source is put on the field terminal, it should produce 14.5Volts and no more without anything else to control it. I reckon the alternator is faulty.

My 2005 ford explorer check charging system warning light

if charging light is on w/ engine running, the fault could be the alternator or another component of the charging system.remove, clean and tighten battery post connections to check for alternator output, use a volt meter or multi-tester set to 50 Volts DC,w/ tester on battery terminals it should read 12 volts W/ engine off;13 to 14 volts w/engine running.if voltage increases when alternator is spinning, suspect battery

Hi I am Vortash the battery light is an indicator to if the Alternator is charging or not .. if the light is on it is saying that it isn't , check the plug and wire connections to the alternator check your earth strap from your negative side of the battery to earth or if it is a continental positive earth car check the + side is attched to the earth securely and cleanly .. check the output from the alternator you should be gettinfg approx 13.5 to 14 .5 volts DC if not switch to ac if you get a reading the rectifier has gone and will need replacing ..( most of the modern alternators come with new brushes attached to a rectifier as a single module ) Check the fan belt tension slipping belt can cause bad charge rate and bring the light on .if you are finding the car is becoming difficult to start the battery going low the fault is realy dead to rights a charging fault.. Hope this helps Vortash
