i bought a 96 ford explorer about 8 days ago , it ran good i drove it for about 40 miles it was running good on 2wheels but the transmissions slipped once when I was on high speed and went to a lower speed , I put the car on N then On D and the transmission went back working fine , I drove it for 2 days and it was running good , then on the 4th day I wanted to try the 4 wheel drive low , I pressed the brakes all the way put the car on N moved the switch to 4wheel low , I heard the mechanism changing into 4w low and drove on 4 wheel low for about 10 minutes and it drove forward and reverse well , it made a sound that it need lubrications on the 4w low mode , I stopped pressed the brakes all the way put it on N and put the switch on 2wheel , it shifted out of 4wheel but it did not engage 2 wheel drive , I was really close from home , I put back to 4wheel low and drove it to my place , took it to my garage , I searched online for the problem and I did some of what I read on the ford forums to engage the 2 wheel drive again .

1 I unplugged the battery for 30 minutes to reset the GEM , then I turned on the car pressed the brakes put it on N and switched it to 2wheel , it did not engage and car stayed as if in neutral , I engaged the 4wheel low and heard it shifting to 4wheel low , I pressed the brakes all the way put it on N then moved the switch to 2wheel , it disengaged the 4w low but did not shift to 2wheel it shifted as if it is in neutral . 2 i turned of the car, jacked it up , put it in N made one my friend sit in it switched it to 4wheel low , then told him to put it in N , switch to 2wheel , I hammered the transfer case switch with a rubber mallet , still the car disengaged the 4wheel low , but when shift to 2wheel it is like in neutral .

3 I got the manual checked the vacuum solenoids under the hood on the left front side C1007 and C1006 and they both work fine , I also checked the C1004 disconnect switch and it works fine.

4 I tried putting the car on 4wheel low , drove it back words for about 60 meter , pressed brakes then N then switch to 2wheel and still does not shift , do I change the shift transfer case motor , it disengages the 4wheel but the 2 wheel does not engage and act like Neutral When the vehicle switch is on 2 wheel, wither it is on D or R it is like neutral when I tried to put it on Park it made like a crrrrrrrrrrrrr sound so I did not try to do that again , it does not go on park when switch is on 2wheel and when D Or R it feels the Same as on neutral , it tried it on the ramp it slips back and forward what other tests should I do to diagnose my problem here

SOURCE: My 98 f150 was in 4WD Hi this morning when I

If the switch was in the 2WD position and the transfer case was locked in a 4WD range, my 2 SWAGs would be bad switch or the connector to the shift motor is damaged / corroded or the fuse to the transfer case shift relay module is blown ( fuse # 17 ) / problem with the transfer case shift relay module.

This is without knowing if the truck was used in 4WD the night prior, and shifted out just before turning off. If this is the case, the shift motor might be stuck, and a few hits with a dead blow hammer to the transfer case might jar it free again ( do not use a metal hammer, it could damage the transfer case ).

The vacuum shift solenoids on the firewall are controlled by the GEM ( Generic Electronic Module ) which is grounding either the 2WD or 4WD solenoid, depending on the shift plate contacts in the transfer case. ( when in 4 or 4H, the contact switch plate signals the GEM, which in turn grounds the correct solenoid ).

Pulling the switch will not cause the transfer case to go back to a default position, the switch has a resistance level for each mode, and needs that value to operate the shift motor.

The resistance values for the switch between the 2 dark blue wires:
2WD - 4100 to 3700 ohms
4H - 1050 to 1150 ohms
4L - 380 to 340 ohms
- find the wire locations on the switch, mark them and remove the connector to test the resistance.

Just my opinion on the order :

1. Check the fuses for the shift motor
2. Try the old school shift method, back up ~ 50' put into park or neutral, and shift from 4WD to 2WD.
2.1. This is to see if the transfer case shift motor is bound up, and reversing might release it
3. Try hammering the transfer case with a dead blow hammer while someone shifts from 2WD to 4WD. You only need the key in the run position, if it happens quick enough after running the engine, the vacuum reservoir will still have enough vac to operate the solenoids. Don't chance running yourself over.
3.1. If this frees up the shift motor and the vacuum has bled off, you can try starting the truck and shifting into 4H then back to 2WD to get the front axle to disconnect or manually vacuum operate the front disconnect motor by applying vacuum to the pink vacuum line on the shift motor on the front axle.

SOURCE: 96 explorer disengages 4wh low but does not engage 2wheel

Does it shift to 4wd high range ? If so then shift to 2wd . What is going on here is the transfer case motor is stopping due to the motor position sensor has gone bad which means that you replace the transfer case motor assembly. But if you wish to make it a 2wd for awhile then remove motor and manually turn shaft . This can be done by raising and supporting rear axle truck in park remove motor turn shaft slowly with pliers and rotating the play in drive shaft. There are stamped markings on back of case showing gear positions..

Did you fix the E brake problem? Replace the rear cables or cut them at the rear brakes. To much pressure on the T case can keep it from shifting. Especially from 4 low.

How do I use the 4 wheel drive on my 1998 Ford explorer. It has a switch that can be turned to auto, 4 low, or 4 high

you can switch into and out of the auto or 4 high modes while moving.

If you want to use 4 low you must stop and place your transmission in neutral. While stopped, turn the switch to 4 low. To get out of 4 low, again stop and in neutral switch back to desired mode. DO NOT SWITCH TO 4 LOW WHILE MOVING!

MY 4x4 on my excursion is stuck and does not want to come off how do i get it to come of and back to 2w drive?

Without the ability to diagnose the problem further, obvious things need to be eliminated. First step, with engine running and foot on brake, shift transmission to neutral. Then slowly turn Four Wheel Drive (4WD) selector knob out of 4WD Low to 4WD High, and then finally to 2 Wheel Drive. "4x4" and "LOW RANGE" indicator lights on the instrument panel should no longer be illuminated. If this does not work, you should visit FixYa for further help or take it to the shop for proper diagnosis. Hopefully, this will help you to FixYa problem!

4WD SWITCH DOES NOT DESELECT 4WD LOW

When you use 4w low you have to put the truck in neutral to shift into and out of low mode. If it still gives problems move the truck back and forth and see if you can unbind the gears and try again.
