ALL THAT SMOKE IS UNBURNED FUEL,SO ITS GETTING TO MUCH DEISEL TO INJECTORS AND THEY CANT BURN THE FUEL OFF FAST ENOUGH SO ITS JUST BLOWING RAW FUEL OUT THE TAIL PIPE,YOU MIGHT SEE IF THERE IS A ADJUSTMENT ON THE PUMP TO RESTRICT THE FUEL,ALSO IF YOU RUN SOME GOOD DEISEL FUEL ADDITIVES IN THE TANK AT FILL UP IT WILL REDUCE THE SMOKE BY LIKE 20%. HOPE THIS HELPS????

Before you do the next oil change, get a can of motor flush.
This is the inexpensive method the free up the rings and restore some of the compression.
Use Shell 15W40 oil ==
Do you know the history of your replacement engine?
When was the last timing belt change?
A loose timing chain and guide can cause injector timing problem.
==== Start monitoring the coolant level for protential head gasket leak. ====
To save time,I would do a high rpm (below REDLINE) highway ran to blow off all remaining diesel SOOT.
Let the shop to do a compression test. DO NOT DO THIS YOURSELF.
The max psi is 1850 PSI
=== Stay away from biodiesel blend fuel until you figure out what's the cause of the problem.
Use Diesel Cleen silver bottle and see is there any improvement. ===
Add the recommend dose of SEAFOAM into the crankcase to soften the valve stem seal.
Leaky valve stem seal can introduce oil drop into the cyclinders over-night. =====
Mointor any oil lose from valve cover.

Is the smoke only from tail pipe?

The fuel pump relay and the oil pressure switch as well. The oil pressure switch runs power to the fuel pump when you first start it
When the oil pressure reaches operating range the relay takes over
They are both inexpensive so replace both of these parts to be safe and kill two birds with one stone. If one goes out the other will soon enough

Diesel 1989 F-250 set too long and will roll over

You may have to bleed the fuel system. There may be a very small air leak in the fuel supply line and after a long time idle, the fuel seeps bac into the tank, leaving an air lock in the pipe. When you go to start, this air makes its way into your injection pump & needs to be bled out before the engine will start. Begin from your fuel filter bleed valve, next the injection pump using the primer pump to transfer the fuel. Next loosen off the injector pipes and crank the engine over until fuel sprays form all the joints. Tighten injector pipes and start. It may run a bit rough for to begin with, but will soon even out. If it doesn't start, repeat bleeding of injectors.

I know some old fuel injected systems will dump fuel because of the coolant temp sensor should be located on lower intake in the front. Also check the timing.

Engine turns over but will not start

Check the distributor and timing order to make sure it has not jumped at all from a timing malfunction.

It is your fuel pump it has to put out at least 30psi at the fuel rail. Regardless of how much gas you think its getting its not enough. Replace the fuel pump.

try some of the Lucas product for diesel engines,
diesels are made for hard work/pulling. not for fuel economy
the best thing you can do is to keep the fuel filter changed as often or sooner than the manual recommends. it will be the heart to a happy diesel
