1 Answer

No --- you need to use the Evap Codes to component
test the Canister & System--- to find a problem

Codes have nothing to do with replacing parts

You may find a picture on the internet if you use the search
engine correctly & ask the right questions

Evap canister

The canister is located in a frame behind the left rear wheel, and you will need wrenches, a socket set, and a jack to raise the back of the truck. Carefully remove the hoses from the canister - if you damage the quick connects, you will have a big problem. Then remove the canister frame by removing the bolts holding it (remove the screws holding the left rear plastic wheel well to get access to the front of the canister frame). Remove the old canister from the frame, attach the new canister, and then reinstall the frame.
If you are having a problem with the EVAP system, you should also check the hoses and replace the EVAP purge valve and the EVAP solenoid valve ( typical failure points on these vehicles - if you have a problem with one component, the rest will follow shortly after). The purge valve is located on the bottom of the vehicle near the center of the rear axle (just follow the small purge hose attached to the canister). The vent valve is located on the top right side on the engine. All parts are available from Amazon or a GM dealer.

2002 Nissan Frontier showing a P01444 code

P1444 EVAP Canister Purge Volume Control Solenoid Valve
This system controls flow rate of fuel vapor from the EVAP canister. The opening of the vapor by-pass passage in the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve changes to control the flow rate. The EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve repeats ON/OFF operation according to the signal sent from the ECM. The opening of the valve varies for optimum engine control. The optimum value stored in the ECM is determined by considering various engine conditions. When the engine is operating, the flow rate of fuel vapor from the EVAP canister is regulated as the air flow changes.

Ford escort wagon 1997 code p1443 displayed. what does this indicate & where is the cannister? thank you.

P1443 - EVAP Control System / Vacuum System Purge Control Solenoid Or Purge Control Valve Fault. A fuel tank pressure change greater than minus (-) 7 inches of water in 30 seconds occurred with a purge (fuel vapor) flow at less than 0.02 pounds per minute.

Possible Causes:
  • Blocked fuel vapor hose between the EVAP canister purge valve and the FTP sensor.
  • Blocked fuel vapor hose between the EVAP canister purge valve and the engine intake manifold.
  • Blocked vacuum hose between the EVAP canister purge valve solenoid and the engine intake manifold.
  • EVAP canister purge valve stuck closed (mechanically).

  • Possible Solution:
Check for blockages between the fuel tank, the EVAP canister purge valve, and the engine intake manifold. Check for obstructions in the EVAP canister purge valve diaphragm and ports.

The canister is on the passengers side near the firewall if I recall correctly.

Need a charcoal canister according to dealer - how hard is this to change and how much should I pay for the part?

This is a simple fix. Any junk yard will have what your looking for and the canister slides in and out with only a couple of bolts. I think its a 10mm or 12mm socket/wrench and there should be a metal band around a black canister. Remove the band and the hoses with a screw driver and a pair of pliers. If you need mark the hoses with some thing that you will remember the placement ie. tape. Once you have the old canister out reverse the steps and put back together. Once it is back together turn your key to the on position and wait 1min. then start.
P.S. When you get the canister from the junk yard make sure the canister doesn't have any cracks or holes in it.
