Is the knocking sound when the car is moving or sitting still as well? Does the grinding sound happen just as you put the car into reverse or does it keep grinding?
These transmissions are very problematic, especially if they are not properly maintained. The most likely candidates are a cracked flywheel or a broken drum inside the transmission. Either way, it sounds like the transmission will have to be removed to pinpoint the problem.

Testimonial: "it does it when its put into reverse only and does it while sitting still foot on brake and when it moves all the other gears are fine..shifts good"

These transmissions make a short buzzing noise when put into reverse (and sometimes going from reverse to drive). This is completely normal. The knocking noise, however, could be either engine or transmission related. Before a major overhaul is considered, check the engine and transmission mounts. Put the car in drive and reverse. While holding the brake firmly, accelerate to about half throttle and watch the engine for excessive movement. The engine will want to rock backwards in drive and forward in reverse. If the engine tries to rotate too far in either direction, suspect a bad mount. There are also mounts at both fenderwells. Excessive wear or play in these mounts could cause the engine or transmission to sag enough to rest on the crossmember or chassis. This would DEFINITELY cause some noises in gear...especially reverse.

I'm hearing a grinding noise when shifting gears in my 97 nissan pathfinder. It's not a full blown grind but just a slight grinding noise. It does it in reverse 1st 2nd 3rd and just started doin it in 4th....

check and/or change the transmission oil. Clutch problems are noticeable in 1st and reverse but as all the rest are syncro controlled you really do not need to use the clutch to change them. just get the engine rpms to match road speed and they will slip in. I am thinking a oil viscosity problem because of the colder weather.

Grinding noise from passanger side when in reverse

Have the constant velocity joints looked at. Make sure there is enough grease in them and the rubber boots haven't been torn. Also have the engine mounts looked at. Worn rubber parts in the mounts can make that knocking sound when you go into reverse.

Started off with a slight knock a few weeks ago,now is a loud grinding noise like a really dry bearing.its a 1998 hatch, manual.camt find where to check gearbox oil

Hello, With so little information, I would HAVE to assume that this is a rod knock. Does it make noise in neutral too? Or only when you drive it. Try to put it in neutral and step on the gas....Does it still knock? A rod knock means you need to rebuild that motor. A rod knock can usually happen from beating on the car or a timing belt slipped a couple of gears. I would check your engine oil level, not transmission. Because low levels of engine oil can create this sound too. Good luck and feel free to write me back with much more detail so that I can further assist you.

2000 outback AT reverse gear grind/grunt

i would inspect the trans mount it may be bent, reverse is a big strain on the drivetrain and if it's not aligned properly this could be your problem, look for the post on the cross member that has arubber bushing on the bottom,if it's not centered its hitting the mount as for the steering column noise i'm thinking this noise maybe the clock spring this is part of the air bag system, the spring can be weak and in turn rubs on casing causing noise, believe it or not the engine noise your describing is a normal operating noise!
