Turn the head lights on.
Try the Starter. See what happens to the lights.
If they stay bright (or dull slightly) the problem is in the Starter. It will have to be removed and checked.

If the lights go out or go VERY dull, the problem is either a faulty battery or bad connection on the battery or the earth lead.

What kind of sounds are you hearing if any when you attempt to crank the engine?
Also have you checked all of the electrical connections to the battery?
Do you see any corrosive battery acid around the terminals?

The problem could be a faulty starter, but many times the problem comes down to corroded connections. Check the battery terminals and cables for corrosion. Check the Ground cable on the engine for corrosion and make sure the connection is tight. Also check the connections on the starter. Auto Zone or Advance Auto will check your starter, but is has to be taken off the vehicle for it to be tested.

Yes you need to remove the starter and have it checked, But do your self a favor and buy a good one, like Napa or carquest, not the zone or kragans, checker, ect. I know you only want to replace it once.

Sounds like the pin has become disengaged from the neutral safety switch. Take out the 2 screws holding the shifter cover in place and see if the switch and engagement pin are in different places

Why won t my car turnover

  • Okay, a clicking sound is the solenoid engaging the starter drive gear but the starting motor is not turning over. First possible is low battery. Second is bad or dirty connection, usually battery terminal. Good enough to energize solenoid but not enough amps to spin starter. Third is a bad starter motor, usually a brush corroded, worn or stuck.
  • Lift the hood and look at the battery terminals. if they are clean and tight, check the battery for charge. I usually hook a booster on and try cranking the engine over. ZIf it works, charge or replace the battery.
  • If it didn't crank, Take a jumper cable and connect the one end to the battery positive. Touch the other end to the starter motor terminal. Motor should turn over, if not, replace the starter.

My 1991 non-turbo Mercury Capri started fine last night but while idling, the Air Bag light began to flash and the Battery light came on. Not wanting to travel I turned off the ignition switch. ...

charge the battery and once fully charged, do a LOAD test on it, clean all the connections and start the car ,, check the voltage at the battery posts with the car running, you should get between 13.5 and 14.5 volts, if not, replace the alternator , if you do, the battery and the cables just needed some attention

Turn the key just a clicking sound all warnings flash !! wont turnover

This sounds like a duf battery, try another charged battery on the car, not with jump leads as a dead battery will sap power. If still the same with another battery I would have starter checked as the only other clicking noise can be a solenoid kicking in but not engaging the starter, Cheers good luck

Battery is charged. Went to start car at the end of the day, and there is a mechanical clicking sound (all dash indicators light) but the starter motor won't engage, and car won't turnover. Bad...

Do this to check if it's a bad battery, turn head light's on and try to start it, if head light go to dim or off, bad battery not holding a charge, if light stay on ok, then this will take two people tap on the starter kinda hard with a hammer or something you can reach it with while some one hold's to key to start, if it start's bad starter or trys to turn engine replace it.

Car won't turnover...only a clicking sound when turning ignition

Hi,
A small battery charger may take 24 hours to charge your battery. If you are sure the battery is fully charged then you may want to clean your battery connections.

STARTER WONT ENGAGE ONLY CLICKS UNDER HOOD STATER

If the clicking sound is coming from the engine bay, from the relay, you may want to have the starter itself checked out. You need to check if the ground cable from the engine to the chassis is secured. If that is OK, you may want to have the starter motor checked.

2002 jaguar x type wont start, lights, radio, air have power. clicking sound when turning the key to start the engine. Engine light stays, no engine turnover

Hi .
unlikely to be immobiliser fault ,so check basics, try a set of jump leads or check battery voltage above 12.5,if the clicking is coming from the starter motor with a fully charged battery then suspect starter motor failure.

1994 villager won't turnover, shifter moves but not the pin

The shifter is not fully in park or neutral beacuse it's loose. Check for a small screw on the floor on the driver side.
If not adjusted properly, the stater won't engage.

here's a pic to help. This view looking up under steering column.
