Hello and welcome the problem is very simple to resolve first make sure you have battery power turn off vehicle open rear gate unlock doors go to rear gate and look at lock unlock again and push the Grey plastic lock trigger mechanism forward towards front glass close gate unlock again make sure lock is still in the position you just set it to and close glass it will the lock. Normally what happens in this situation was power was removed from your jeep and the rear gate was opened with no power running to electric lock so it stays in a set position you cannot lock the glass because there was no power in the electric lock I will lock once you reset it Hope this help. SOURCE: tailgate will not open
There is a cutout on the inner tailgate cover that can be removed with a screwdriver. This will give you access to the latch assembly. There is a small lever mounted on the latch assembly. When you move it toward the driver side it will release the tailgate.
This works on my 03 Liberty but not on my 05 Liberty. They both use the same type of latch. Does anyone know where to get a latch other than a Jeep dealer? Jeep wants $235.00 for the latch.

Hello. I can assist you. Most likely, your door latch is broken and will need to be replaced. Historically these were metal and rusted due to exposure, soooooo now they are plastic and after a few hundred uses, they break. You can purchase the tailgate handle and replace it yourself but my recommendation is to let the shop do it as it can be a little tricky and often the linkage rods also need to be cleaned and lubricated. The total cost of this repair is generally about $75. Thanks for choosing Fixya!
