I have a 1988 Buick Electra Park Ave that the service engine soon light turns on and off really quick not sure if it's an electrical issue or battery is going bad or if there is a problem going on with the engine the needle drops and that when the light turns on and off or even when I accelerate it doesn't even stay on it quickly goes off

I will assume this is not your first check engine light,
on the dash of any vehicle you've owned,so as in
the past, have a shop check for codes & diagnose the
system that set them

If you have the codes, Google them & see what you can learn

Type: OBD & the code

Surely would not drive that car like that, unless your prepared
to be left at the side of the road

SOURCE: 1994 Buick Lesabre service engine soon light. Can't read code.

I found several shops in my area, Albany, NY that had the older code readers. It worked fine, and cost me $30.00. It showed a bad O2 sensor that I replaced myself. I suggest you go to a reliable shop. Auto Zone/Advance etc.. do not have the right code readers. Joe

It is most likely the Throttle Position Sensor has gone bad. But if the check engine light is on, the only way to tell exact problem, is to have a scanner placed on the vehicle to have the codes read.

The code PO742 indicates the torque converter clutch is stuck on.
The torque converter is what connects the engine to the transmission.
It engages and disengages according to signals from the pcm, to aid in
smooth shifting. There are a couple of things you can try. make sure trans. fluid is full, if thats ok check the 20 pin connector, located on left
side of car on top of transmission bell housing. Make sure there's no
corrosion or bent pins. If this clears the code your all set, if not you may
want to ask your mechanic and see what he/she recomends.

the common system problem look like the headlights switch
and cluster back bulbs .... remove front panel cluster and remove headlight switch look for burn wire or connector terminal. test light
fuses all

I have a 1995 Buick Park Ave Ultra. The car has power but will not turn over. I was told by one shop that it might be the V.A.T.S. system and by another that it is the IGNITION CONTROL MODULE.


Make sure the battery cables are clean and tight on the battery. Check to see if the wires to the starter are tight. Try starting it in neutral to make sure the safety switch is being make. Also hold it up into park and try.

Got 1988 buick park ave.car wouldnt start,hooked


You may have damaged the starter when the engine kicked back.

The ignition module may have been defective.....but change the crank pickup too.........more likely it is the cause of the problems.

Change the crank pickup at every tune up..........it has a high failure rate.

If your engine has 250km or 150K miles you may need a chain soon.

alright. try cleaning out trans gears and replace your timing belt if your ign dont turn smooth thats probably the 'jumpy' problem
