Question about 1998 Audi A4
Must rev it quickly when starting and needs to be around 3000 rpms before I switch gears to keep it from stalling out. No weird noises or anything else

hi i am dieter
here is something to try
keep some cold water with you and the next time it happens very quickly get out and pour the water on the crankshaft sensor then restart. If it starts right away without the usual two minutes than you will need to change this sensor. The sensor is easy to find you will see a wiring harness around the crankshaft pulley(the large one at the bottom the basically runs all your accessories like the p/s pump, alternator, water pump). Try to famaliarize yourself as to the location of the sensor first so that you can try to restart it within about 30 seconds.

SOURCE: car over-revving then stalling
check your idle air control motor or the throttle position sensor.
Alot of the new cars have a electronic motor that controls the butterfly valve in the throttle body, that could also be faulty and would require you to get a new throttle body, not cheap, but not outrageous in price most of the time.
If still not sure it would be best to take it to the dealer, they have specialized scanners and other tools that most regular shops do not have.

one reason for stuck in 2nd gear its anti theft if u have remvd fuses and replaced it takes it as tampering and the computer has to be reset which costs at audi agents but i got from autoelectrician that if u disconnect battery for ten minutes then re connect it re sets the onboard computer i had same problem and ive done it twice with mine with success could be same with yours try it its so inexpensive

Have you had the vehicle put on a diagnostic machine, does the car feel slugish, any lack of power, we have seen a lot of these vehicles with air mass sensor faults. When they fail they do not show a code but with the right scanner they can be seen not working. This affects the gearchange because the ecu does not have the correct data to shift. Of course it could also be the transmission is in need of overhaul. but i would take it to a good diagnostic garage first. It is not uncommon for the air mass sensor to fail after it has been disturbed or knocked in the workshop. we have never found out why.

it probably corroded the motor and or contacts. You can either take the motor out and try to clean it using elctromode, or replace it
Check ebay, they usually have a good aftermarket laying around for much cheaper than a dealer ship
