I recenty took this vehicle in to shop and the code that came up was P0171. I was told to start with a tue up, fuel injection cleaning. I look line and see it has to do more with n 02 sensor. My check engine light is on and the car has a rough idle, slight hesitation while driving but not when accelorating. No loss in power. The tune up is about $400, and was wondering is it that or something else?! Just don't want to waste hundreds on 1 fix. Is there a way to find ut exactly whats causing the check engine light to come on?

The o2 sensor is located by the catalytic converter and anaylyses the exhaust emissions,it may need a tune up but first i'd check all air intake hoses for leaks ,signs of wear etc as if the air/fuel mixture going into engine isn't correct the emissions will not be either ,you can get fuel additives which will clean cylinder, valves and the cat converter so try this first , if the light is still on get the garage to clear the OBD memory and retest drive as a stored code isn't always automaticly erased

SOURCE: check engine light 97 ford explorer. obd-II po141

Looked up your OBD II code for your Explorer and got the following: Bank 1 Sensor 1
The possible causes are listed below per Chilton: *same result for all engines available on your vehicle

Trouble Code: P0141 (4.0L V6 VIN E Auto)
HO2S-11 Heater Circuit (Bank 1, Sensor 1) Print this code dataprint_icon_codes.gif
Number of Trips to Set Code: 2
OBD II Monitor Type: CCM Details
Indicators: MIL Details
Trouble Code Conditions:
During testing the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) heaters are checked for open and short circuits and excessive current draw. The test fails when the current draw exceeds a calibrated limit or an open or short circuit is detected.
Possible Causes:

  • Vacuum hose disconnected on exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module (ESM) applications* Short to VPWR in the harness or HO2S
  • Water in the harness connector
  • Open VPWR circuit
  • Open GND circuit
  • Low battery voltage
  • Corrosion or incorrec
The sensors themselves appear in the illustration linked to below. The illustration is for the Ford Ranger but indications are that other models have similar locations. Hope this helps with your problem. Best of luck!
Greg

SOURCE: location of the bank 1 sensor 2 O2 sensor on a 2001 ford escape

B1 means the sensor is located on the same bank of the engine that has the #1 cylinder. B2 is located on the opposite bank.
S1 means the sensor is located BEFORE the catalytic converter
S2 means the sensor is located AFTER the catalytic converter

You didn't say which engine you have, so I've included the diagrams of both 4 cyl and 6 cyl so you can see the banks

Where is the o2 sensor on a 2002 Ford Explorer bank 1 sensor 1

It is the one that is on the driver's side, first one in the exhaust stream before the catalytic converter.

Cant find base1 sensor2 on a 96 ford explorer 6 cylinder 4 wheel drive

It's called bank, not base. On a v6 or v8, each side of the engine is called a bank. Bank 1 is always the side where the number 1 cylinder is located. On Fords, number 1 is on the right bank or side, the right as if you were sitting in the vehicle, so well, the passenger side.
Sensor 2 is the oxygen sensor in the exhaust stream after the catalytic converter (somebody recently called it the cadillac converter!). You have two oxygen sensors on the right bank, one before the cat and sensor 2 is after the cat. The only purpose of sensor 2 is so the computer can monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converter. It compares the readings from sensor 1 and sensor 2. Sensor 1 information is how the computer adjusts fuel trim.

How many oxygen sensors are there on a 1996 ford explorer 8 cyl., 4.0 eng.

The answer depends on the type of exhaust system you have. You will have either 3 or 4 total O2 sensors on your V8. If you have single exhaust with a single catalytic converter then you will have 3 O2 sensors (2 upstream sensors & one downstream sensor - "up or down stream" meaning before of after the catalytic converter). If you have either dual exhaust and/or two catalytic converters then you have 4 O2 sensors (2 upstream & 2 downstream). If you have an MIL light (malfunction indicator light, or "check engine light") the code will indicate "front bank / bank one", which is one of the 2 upstream O2's before the catalytic converter(s), or "rear bank / bank two", which is one of the O2's after the catalytic converter(s).

O2 sensors

The o2 sensor you are looking for is on the drivers side of the engine and it is the first on closest to the engine. Before the cat. I hope this is helpful.
