SOURCE: clutch slipping

this is how to adjust the clutch correctly

NOTE: From mid-94 an automatically adjusted cable was progressively introduced. this has no nut type adjusters at the clutch end

Models up to 1992 .... 145mm
Models from 1993 on .. 162mm +/- 12.0mm

The clutch adjustment is checked by measuring the clutch pedal travel.
1. If a new cable has been fitted, settle it in position by depressing the clutch pedal at least 20 times.
2. Ensure that there are no obstructions beneath the clutch pedal.
Depress the clutch pedal fully to the floor, and measure the distance from the center of the clutch pedal pad to the floor.
Now release the pedal and again measure the distance from the pedal to the floor.
3. Subtract the first measurement from the second to obtain the clutch pedal travel.
If this is not within the range given in the specifications, adjust the cable as follows.
4. The clutch cable is adjusted by means of the adjuster nut on the transmission end of the inner cable.
On some models, access to the locknut is limited and, if required, the air cleaner duct or housing component can be removed or disconnected to improve access.
5. Working in the engine compartment, slacken the locknut on the end of the clutch cable.
Adjust the position of the adjuster nut, then re-measure the clutch pedal travel.
Repeat this procedure until the clutch pedal travel is as specified.
6. Once the adjuster nut is correctly positioned, and the pedal travel is correctly set, securely tighten the cable locknut.
Where necessary, refit any disturbed air cleaner duct/housing components.

I understand these cars have a sealed clutch system. When they fail you replace the whole kit master, hydrolic pipe and slave (comes in one piece). Search on ebay maybe £45 or so.

Clutch troubleshooting

Is the clutch hydraulic or cable? in 80's peugeot's they had both depending on engine, if its hydraulic it could be failed seals or a leak, if its a cable it could have snapped, get somebody with a little mechanical knowledge to have a look.

Why dose the clutch pedal stick down on my peugeot ?

The linkage between the pedal and the clutch throwout bearing needs attention - the return spring appears to not have been reinstalled correctly, or has broken.

I have a peugeot boxer 1.9d van and cant remove the clutch cable from out of bulk head, pedal side as it has snapped, do you have any ideas

If the cable has completely snapped and not attached to the clutch pedal, the whole cable, casing and broken cable should just about fall out of the bulkhead. I have never had a problem with that on any vehicle.

Dragging into gear and slipping when driving. nw clutch or cable? ive been told its not my clutch

If there's slippage when's the clutch. Make sure that the clutch cable is in good order and not jamming as this would give the same effect as a worn clutch.Check the cable inner for broken strands. As the clutch is not breaking enough to allow you to select gears quietly, and as is slipping in the higher gears, I would say it could be worn out too and require a new complete cluch kit installed, if the cable is operating ok.

I recently had a new clutch fiited on My peugeot 406 GLX 1999 model, and lately the gears have been stiff.

this could be 1 of 4 things

you have become use to change characteristics of the old well worn/broken down oil - but even so new oil should not be excessivey stiffer

incorrectly adjusted clutch - although 406s had a self adjuster cable

incorrectly installed clutch

or most probably

wrong gear box oil - i have experience this, garages will use one grade/type of gear oil - check what spec your car is meant to have and change it - it made a huge difference on my peugeot

the oil filler and drain are accessible by removing the road wheel on the gearbox side of the car
