How do I replace rear coil spring


you need a spring compressor. There are three or four bolts which hold the spring/strut in place on each side.. remove the assembly and apply the spring compressor to take off the tension. Remove the spring and slowly release the tension. compress the new spring and assemble in reverse order... replace the struts at the same time or you will regret it later FYI..

Spring broke on back axle

Its jsut like those front coil springs on all the older cars had with a shock going up threw it.... ist coil design and about 16 inches in height yours is all by itself on the rear axle go to muffler shop they do shocks and springs cheapest way. Just remember if you replace one only side your car might be higher on new side of coli replaced,, its kinda like buys shoes dont just buy one but the pair

Rear pasenger coil over spring broke at the bottom of the spring. Makes clunking noise , is there a temporary fix. I dont think it is going to come apart, I know they say spring steel cant be welded, What...


You will have to remove the strut and the use a tool like this to compress the spring to remove it and replace ot with a new one or a second hand one from a breakers yard.

REMOVE REAR SEAT AND PACKAGE SHELF TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE UPPER SHOCK ATTACHING NUTS.REMOVE UPPER ATTACHING NUTS. RAISE VECHICLE REMOVE REAR WHEEL AND SUPPORT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WITH A JACK REMOVE LOWER SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNTING BOLT. REMOVE SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY FROM THE VECHICLE. COMPRESS THE COIL SPRING WITH THE PROPER SPRING COMPRESSOR TOOL. REMOVE CENTER RETAINING NUT HOLDING THE UPPER MOUNTING INSULATOR. SLOWLY DECOMPRESS THE COIL SPRING.REMOVE THE MOUNTING INSULATOR AND THE COIL SPRING. REMOVE THE COIL SPRING. TO INSTALL COMPRESSED COIL SPRING ONTO THE STRUT ASSEMBLY. BE SURE TO THE END OF THE SPRING IS IN THE NOTCH ON THE LOWER SEAT.INSTALL UPPER MOUNTING INSULATOR. YOU WILL NEW LOCKNUT FOR THE CENTER RETAINING NUT OF THE COIL SPRING. CENTER RETAINING NUT AND TORQUE THE NUT TO 13 TO 17 FT LBS. SLOWLY REMOVE THE SPRING COMPRESSOR TOOL. INSTALL SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY IN THE VECHICLE AND INSTALL THE MOUNTING FASTERNERS AND TORQUE LOWER MOUNTING BOLTS TO 72 - 87 FT LBS. INSTALL WHEEL.LOWER VECHICLE. Was there a recall on 2002 mercury sable front coil springs before,my tire went flat and i was gona change it then noticed that it wasnt a small puncture but that the coil spring broke off and punctured it...

Your front suspension is a McPherson struts assembly type.
Maybe I do not have the right english wording to satisfy the purists but roughly the complete strut assembly unit at the bottom is attached to the knuckle by two strong bolts and at the top to the vehicule frame by 3 nuts on studs. The coil spring you're talking about is mounted and compressed between the strut assembly base support bracket/seat and the top plate of the assembly. By the way, the built in shock absorber is the component you see going from the bottom to the top trough your coil spring. To remove the coil spring or replace the strut itself you have to compress the coil spring using a coil spring compressor tool. It a relatively dangerous process for beginners because the coil spring is under important tension.
If you plan to keep your vehicule several years have your coil springs replaced by new one. In this case I would suggest to change both for an even behaviour of your vehicule. The main reason they broke is their aging but mostly due to bad shock absorbers (struts) so by the same time have new struts installed. For coil springs, struts parts and labour it could cost you $1,000 and more to have it replaced (both sides) depending on where you have your mecanic done.

If you don't plan to keep your vehicule on a long term, I suggest to get a complete used struts assembly for this side (includes struts and coil spring) at a scrap yard for $125 and less and have it installed for approx. 1 hour and less of labour time. It could be a cheap solution.

Do not have new tire installed before you fix it otherwise you will scrap the internal structure of you tire.

How do i get a broken pich bolt out of my rear spring so i can replace it, drilling is not working


1. You can replace the spindle = Expensive
2. You can use a small drill bit (cobalt) and drill though enough to use an extractor to remove the offending piece.

Suggestions to help might be to use a little PB Blaster and or heat on the bolt before trying to remove the offending piece before you attempt to remove it with an extractor. Take your time as you will most likely get only one chance to get it out.

Extractor sets are pretty cheap at Harbor Freight if you have one near you. You can insert the extractor from either side in the bolt hole.

Replace coil spring


You have to remove them - that "block" is the upper strut-to-body mounting section and serves as the upper seat for the spring as well as the anchor for the top of the strut. You need to take those four 17mm bolts out, as well as the rear upper sway bar bolt, the upper control arm bolt (at the top of the hub), and the bottom bolt on the strut, where it goes through the lower control arm. You'll then have to compress the spring enough to take the bolt out of the "block" (it goes through sideways, and I believe is 19mm on the bolt head as well as the nut). At this point, you can slide the spring/strut out of the block, decompress the spring, pull out the strut, and install a new spring over the strut. Recompress enough to get the top of the strut visible through the anchor bolt hole in the block, rebolt it, decompress the spring, and reinstall the assembly in the car. Usually when you go to reinstall it, the bottom of the strut is not angled quite right once the top four 17mm bolts are back in and the block is secured to the body. I put a large screwdriver through the lower strut bolt hole at the bottom of the strut and use that to turn it, or I grab the weld near the bottom of the strut with large ChanneLock pliers and turn it until it's aligned with the control arm properly. Once it is, put the lower bolt back in, rebolt the control arm and sway bar, and you're good to go.

Note - this job will not affect alignment specs - you don't remove any bolts used in aligning the car, so that's not a concern when doing this repair.

If you have the coil spring suspension, then your spring for that corner has really sagged[doubtful] I suspect you actually have the rear air suspension ,and the air spring for the Right/Rear has lost air, allowing the rear end to lower down greatly. Usually, you need a new air spring when one develops a leak. You may or may not be able to see the leak with a spray solution of soapy water after the spring is removed for inspection. Sometimes you have to apply about 20psi of air pressure into the spring to inflate it a bit, then put the spring under water in a big enough tank/tub of water to catch the leak that way.

I broke my rear strut.


i would not recommend doing it with a jack you may get hurt try to get a spring compressor tool from a rental place
there is allot of pressure in those springs

will the spring flop around if you move it a little if the spring is allready lose and NO pressure on it you can remove it without a spring compressor

Check the rear springs and be sure the coils are not broken. Both of them broke on my 99 A4, right at the bottom where the spring sits on the perch. It didn't cause problems in driving since the continuous part of the spring was seated, but the excess seated spring coil was snapped off. I've seen it on other A4s as well, so I wouldn't be surprised if your Jetta has a similar problem. Dismount the rear wheels and inspect the coil springs - if they're broken, it'll be evident. If they are, you can likely pick up another set from someone on eBay or www.vwvortex.com at a reasonable price.
