2001 300m overheating and leaking water got code po117

P0117 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Low Input,,,Code P0117 indicates a low voltage input from the Coolant Temperature Sensor to the PCM. don't assume that the sensor is bad in this case, often it can be as simple as Rusty and/or corroded Engine Coolant, also check the connections to be sure they are tight, if these check out, then and only then,, you'll have to change the sensor

My friends car came up with this code and p0117 and he says when he accelerates it feels like its holding back

The P0117 code would not effect the acceleration of the vehicle. Probably just need a good tune up unless there are other codes showing in the system.

P0117 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Low Input. The engine coolant temperature sensor is used to detect the engine coolant temperature. The sensor modifies a voltage signal from the ECM. The modified signal returns to the ECM as the engine coolant temperature input. The sensor uses a thermistor which is sensitive to the change in temperature. The electrical resistance of the thermistor decreases as temperature increases.

- Harness or connectors (The sensor circuit is open or shorted.)
- Engine coolant temperature sensor may be faulty
- Low engine coolant level.

- Replaced coolant temperature sensor
- Repair connector or harness

I have a 1996 Mazda 626, the check engine light came on and the car has been redlining the the temp gauge. I got the engine codes which are: p0117 and p0421. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?...

The cooling fan must run or the car must be running into the wind to keep from cooking the engine. Physically turn the fan to see if it turns freely (cold engine). The computer reads coolant temperature and trips the fan relay on when normal temperature is reached. You need to read the control voltage at the relay to determine the problem. Possible bad temp sensor.
