Your not providing any Emission Gas Numbers

High Level of WHAT?

You got 5 Gases, what's high & what are the limits

If you know all that, you can google exhaust gases & read
up on the reasons & solution & print the info & put in a binder,
if you do all your own work,if not, let a shop worry about it

SOURCE: HCL too high, did not pass smog check.

ok well this might be a hard one . from what i can gather by the co reading and the o2 reading is that we are running fat. a couple things can cearte this one how many miles do we have on this mtr, two do we have a vacuumn leak? three is the vech going into closed loop? some how we need to get are hands on a scanner so we can look at a data, other wise you are going to be throwing parts at this vech , and thats not the way to fix your problem. the odds are that you may have some lazy o2 sensors you are close. have you tryed running the vech down the road before you go in for the test. the converter is like a hot water heater you have to bring it to operating temp before it will operate correctly. keep me informed

SOURCE: high nox fail smog test any remedies? 99

NOX is created when the internal combustion temperature gets to high. The egr system uses burnt exhaust gases to line to cylinder walls. The purpose of this is decrease internal combustion temperature therefore reducing the amount of NOX created.Would look to a possible egr malfunction usually they will trigger the check engine light but not always. The 4.3L has been known to have issues with carbon buil up in the egr and the egr pintle not open and closing properly.

SOURCE: failed smog test

Most modern vehicles have 2 catalytic converters, there may be one located at the exhaust manifold, or be what's called a resonator. The resonator will look almost like a cherry bomb muffler, this is a crucial part of exhaust emissions.

Fail smog test

fist i would like you to post the year make and model of the truck along with the HC ppms and NOX ppm it would be very helpful but high hc and nox can be attributed to a faulty EGR system nox is produced when the combustion chamber temperature gets too high so a small amount of exhaust is cycled back into the air stream to help cool them there are other causes but without looking at the levels its much harder to say

My 2000 Nissan Frontier won't pass emissions for an unknown reason. It isn't coming up with any codes that would explain this. I had the mass air flow sensor replaced about 2 months ago. The check engine...

Well what kind of numbers are they getting from the exhaust on the smog machine? Are the hydrocarbon numbers close to passing level or are they at gross polluter level? There are a lot of factors involved with high emission numbers. Sometimes just doing a basic tune-up can help clean up the numbers. Things like making sure the air filter is clean. Changing the fuel filter, plug wires, and spark plugs can help. Is the catalytic converter ok? Could have a bad batch of gas also. You could try running some fuel injection cleaner in the tank to help clean up the numbers. And the O2 sensor can cause problems with the emissions. It would be hard to pinpoint the exact problem with out a physical inspection of the vehicle.
