I suggest you check a few things before you tear out the dash. Check the fuse for the dash guages, and then check the sending unit in the fuel tank. This can be checked with an ohm meter with removing the tank. I would further suggest you buy a manual for your car (at an auto parts store) if you plan to maintain it. It will show you most of what you need to know. I hope this helps you.

Gas gauge b.roken

a Suzuki swift in snakes clothing... or varies? just a hint helps.
which way is needle going, too high or low.?
did you do the 2 tests in the FSM.? for said gauge>
ground the fuel guage wire, and guage goes to max
then check the sender ohms (DMM dial to resistance)
here is the method. only the wire color change. if at all.
login to alldata.com
this is tracker but is near same.

$4
remove clusters.

the cluster shell 4 screws, see em. remove em.
the see cluster? see the 4 screws at edge, same deal.
the speedo cable is the only hard part, but why do all that.?
why not do the 5 sec. test.

i looked at my huge files for metro/swift and no gauge pages.
have all the others.
one way to do this test, is pull the wire to the tank and ground it.
gauge goes to FULL.
gage is good. (fail , then)
if you do that at the gauge, and it works then the wire from
guage to tank are open. (Low all time) if FULL all time, wire is shorted to the body.

Repair broken gas gauge

Most gauges work ok but the sender unit in the tank is what causes most problems. I would be looking for a broken/loose wire to the sender or a faulty sender unit

My1986 nissan 300zx turbo digital dash does not work. The RPM gage works and the battery charge indicator work. Everything thing else is lit with zero's and gas gauge blinks E. If I recall this ca

my guess is that since you hit a bump in the road that its possible that a plug has come loose from the back of the dash.. remove instrument cluster and inspect for loose or broken wiring and connectors..

1998 GEO METRO. When I turn my lights to the "on," position, the headlights do not work. However, in this position, i do have all other lights on the back of my car. WHEN the lights are turned...

This happened to my 98 metro. It was a broken wire under the dash near the brake pedal. I guess i hit it enough with my big fat foot enough to make it break eventually. It started of as a flickering of the lights at it made intermittent contact as it was slowly breaking.

I soldered it back together and put some heat shrink tubing over the solder joint.

sound like a problem with your sending unit inside the gas tank with fuel pump or gauge in dash defective but with GM usually it is the sending unit
