If this is occurring when the tank is full or close to full, or at specific levels of the tank, the most common cause would be the float in the tank sloshing with the gasoline and bumping against the tank itself. This is generally not cause for concern or alarm, nor does it cause any damage, and is simply a result of physics. If it happens at all times, that is still the likely cause, however a quick check over by a dealership might be warranted if it concerns you. Good dealerships will not charge you anything to at least answer the question with complete confidence or take a look.

SOURCE: noise when in park

Replace drive belt asap, cause when it goes the whole car shuts down entirely right there.

Car cuts off while driving, thumping noise coming from gas tank area when you park (sometimes)

well sounds like the thumping is probably the float inside the tank that tells you how much fuel is in the tank on your dash thats normal but try changing your fuel filter, hope this helps.

2001 Galant..Shut off while parked and not it won't start!

That sound you hear, does it sound like it is coming from the back of the car, fuel tank? This is most likely the fuel pump starting up. I would still have your fuel pressure checked, if too low you'll have issues. If fuel pressure is good it most likely has to do with the electronics; does it have spark? Remove a spark plug lead and check while cranking the engine over. Also it is possible the timing belt failed, remove a dust cover off the cam, crank over and be certain it rotates. My gut says you have an electrical issue, such as cam or crank sensor. You'll need to check cseveral items to confirm.
If I may be of further service, please ley me know.
Thanks,
Tom

The fill tube for the fuel tank is either clogged with something or the anti-siphon feature (what stops people from stealing your gas) is fouled up. The tank and fill tube have to be inspected.

Noise when in park

the squeaking sound coming from the engine would very very likely be the serpentine belt, it is probably not properly adjusted but could also be cracking and need replaced, after the belt warms up the belt is more plyable and looses the noise. i would replace it, as for the rough sound i would need more info i.e. exactly where the noise is coming from if it changes when gas is tapped, try putting different conditions that make it worse or better when something is done, this will help detecting the area or problem at hand.
