A knocking sound on my 98 vw passat engine and a ticking sound on the upper engine side - help

I fear the news is probably not good. Many Passats around 1998-2004 were badly affected by engine sludge even when oil changes were done regularly.

http://www.thecarconnection.com/news/1049827_settlement-addresses-engine-sludge-issue-in-audi-a4-vw-passat

These noises usually mean that oil starvation has caused an engine bearing to fail, and also excessive wear in the camshaft area. If the sump is removed the sludge (if there) will be seen.

1999 VW Passat 1.8 Turbo replaced Suction Pump Valve. It was broken. The car has a hesitation when accelerating. Feel like a vacuum leak.

If the vacuum pump was a used part did you **** on the pipe to check if it operates correctly, and then there is the throttle plate(accelerator), it needs cleaning as this causes hesitation(remove the fat black pipe on the front right and hold the plate open manualy and wipe clean with wd40 etc, dont use carb cleaner as this removes throttle plate bearing grease) as does dirty air filter, sparkplugs and like you state vacuum hoses. On my passat i replaced all vacuum hoses and clamps as they split after 5 years from heat etc.Dont waste time replacing one, do all.Clean and wd40 your ht leads and clean and inspect the sparkplugs as damp etc causes hesitation.Hows the air filter.

I can not locate my car gear fluid

If the vehicle is an automatic, the oil check/ filler plug is on the bottom of the gearbox sump. To check oil level jack vehicle up, keeping it level. Start vehicle from cold and remove 17mm allen key plug on bottom of sump. Oil should just start spilling from aperture at an oil temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. If not top up fluid until it does start spilling. Temperature important as oil expands as it heats up.

There is a small drain plug that needs to be removed, the car level, suspended on Jack's, monitor the tranny fluid temperature with obd2 tool, engine started from cold, , the fluid will ooze out of the open plug hole at proper temperature. Use a new plug when done topping the fluid. Intricate task

Need to change the oil pressure sqitch on a vw passat

Hi before you do an oil change try seafoam in the engine oil. this can sometimes fix the problems you are having, I used seafoam in engine oil and fuel and breather line and ran engine for 100 miles, but don't run hard, and its cleaned all the sump and oil veins in the engine, as checked with a scope looking though the oil sump plug. it did a really good job, my engine is a bit older than yours 1994. oil sensor is at the bottom of the engine on the sump. pressure sensor is above the oil filter it has a single wire conection

HOW DO YOU REMOVE THE OIL PUMP ON 2003 PASSAT?

It's a difficult job requiring the engine to be hoisted above the engine bay so the sump can be removed to gain access to other parts needed to be removed before doing the pump removal.
