Question about Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a jeep cherokee limited and sometimes when I got to start it, it shakes a little and then I get a burnt smell from the engine

Even when I put it in drive or reverse I get that burning smell and sometimes the engine light comes on but not always -- I recently changed my oxygen sensor

The sensor is brand new from just a couple of weeks ago -- do you still think that it can be the wiring to the sensor?? Also, the smell is one that you indicated, a burning oil smell coming from engine? Could this be the gasket?

Check that the smell is not from the o2sensor wires burning on the exhaust system. This will also give other problem indications.

Thank you Bill for your comment -- I went to Tuffy Auto and they changed my o2sensor just about 1 month ago and then they did a test with the codes and all was fine -- so I'm now thinking that it may be coming from my engine?? What are your thoughts Bill?

I notice that you have not checked the wiring yet to the sensor. When you select a gear and put a load on the engine it shakes so that indicates a misfire under load. That can be from either electrical--coils--HT leads or injectors---fuel pressure--injectors. Shaking engines are allowed to do so from worn, loose engine mounts and that tends to shake wiring looms and that means a wire can be touching a hot engine part anywhere. The burnt engine smell is too vauge to assess as smells from an engine are distinct as in boiling coolant smell, burning oil smell or burning plastic smell or running rich smell which is an unburnt petrol smell along with a carbon smell. I cannot smell it here but you can so now that you know which smell it is it narrows down the area in which to look for your problem

It is common for people to not use the correct tools for removing and replacing the 02 sensors and twist up the wires until they break internally. Check that the wires are not touching a heat source Oil smell indicates leaking gaskets that are running down onto a manifold. As the engine system has to be sealed for correct operation then the gasket may be your problem

Runs good most of time, but sometimes it feels like it loses power but if you let off gas or give it more gas it straightens out and runs good until it gets to cruising speed and then does it again.

Sounds like a fuel filter. Question - When was last healthy tune up? Plugs, wires, All filters especially fuel filter? I'd start there and then run a good fuel system cleaner through it. Ut'll give you a good "ground zero" point if problem continues.

Hi, my name is Raul, I own a repair shop and I

I know if a fuel pressure regulator diaphram goes, it will emit fuel fumes in engine compartment. may not be but this is worth a try. a leaking regulator can cause hard starting, poor fuel economy, stalling, check engine light, gas smell under hood. take a fuel pressure reading. In most of the cases, the fuel pressure should read 45 p.s.i. to 55 p.s.i. for the injection mechanism and 14 to 18 p.s.i. in a throttle body injection assembly. Even a slight variation from the specified extremes may be acceptable, but a large deviation is a sign of problem and bound to result in engine failures. check fuel filter first.

HI, It may seem obvious, but sometimes overlooked.... have you checked the oil level, as low oil can cause some strange things to happen! My 96 4 liter would be reluctant to move sometimes, but after I topped it up, it has been fine.
