There is a solenoid switch that locks up your torque converter to get a 1:1 input for your transmission. This solenoid (or less likely its circuit) does not operate. You probably don't feel the difference in driveability but this definitely affects fuel mileage of the car... The solenoid for your particular application is available for about 60$ Canadian at NAPA auto parts here in Canada. Not too sure about USD$ and labour costs...

It sounds like your speed sensor may have gone bad.
If you can get it to Auto Zone they can scan the truck for you and let you know if it is the speed sensor. Auto Zone scan for free and and may have the parts right there.
The part is not that hard to replace and they can give you the instructions on how to do it your self. The only other thing is to take it to a transmission shop and have them scan it and repaire it.
Just be careful that they try not to sell you the whole transmission and not just the sensor if that's what it is.
Good luck and hope this help. Be careful that you do not burn out the transmission as it will not shift, You may have to change the transmission fluid and filter if there already burn. The speed sensor is on the out side of the transmission on the driver's side. Check the wire harness and clips too.

SOURCE: grinding noise while driving.
a) a brake disc shield is too close to the disc, and it's coming into contact in the circumstances you outline
b) pebbles stuck between the disc shield and the disk
c) dried out wheel bearings
d) worn Universal Joints in the drive shafts
e) worn A/C pump
f) worn alternator
g) worn water pump
Is the noise still present above 15 miles an hour and past 1500 rpm when the clutch is disengaged (i.e. gearbox in neutral?). The answer to this question may help you to pinpoint the source. I know it's stating the obvious but the fact that you're hearing a grinding sound means it's caused by something that is moving relative to something else. Again this should help narrow down the cause.

There is a tsb on this and the fix is to change the engine contrl
ol modul if the code is p2716. There is nothing wrong with the solenoid....the problem is the sender to the solenoid.

There is a Bulletin on this concern, and it is a warrantable condition for 8 years or 80,000 miles so you are still covered by the factory warranty.
The problem is a logic issue in the PCM. The correction is a new PCM with updated software.
Reference bulletin #TC015-07
The contents are below:
TRANSMISSION & CLUTCH
HARSH SHIFT AND M.I.L. "ON"
DTC P2716 Models:
'05 - '07 Corolla & Matrix (1ZZ-FE) September 20, 2007
Some 2005 - 2007 model year Corolla and Matrix vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle may exhibit a harsh shift condition and a M.l.L. ON" with DTC P2716 stored.
Improvements have been made to the Engine Control Module (ECM) (SAE term:
Powertrain Control Module/PCM) to reduce the possibility of this condition occurring.
^ 2005 - 2007 model year Corolla and Matrix (2WD) vehicles equipped with the 1ZZ-FE engine.
This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emissions Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
