The lock is held in the door by a large "c" shaped flat spring plate . If you have the lock bit in your hand it will be that clip and you will need to remove the door trim to get inside to replace it in the small groove just under the edge of the lock

SOURCE: 2003 VW Golf - O2 Sensor?

Honestly it is not very expensive to replace, but it is not extremely important. What it does is measure the oxygen/fuel level coming out of the engine. This tells the computer that the engine is either using the right air/fuel mixture or allows the computer to change the mixture slightly to allow the car to run properly. You could pull the sensor out and clean the terminal as it usually has alot of carbon build up due to its location, but this is normally a temporary fix. I hope this helps you with your problem.

SOURCE: how to change drivers door latch on vw golf sdi

Have you tried using WD-40 to help the lock from sticking you may not need replace it.
However if you feel it's necessary ...you need to remove the inside door panel with the window up remove the two bars that are you inner lock and door handle levers a plastic clip holds them into place on the lock itself .a drop light is very helpful once the levers are disconnected remove the outer screws on the door itself the lock should fall off from the inside at this point ...install new lock and reinstall rods { levers} to the lock itself test before reinstalling door panel then secure when confident it works properly

Dear sir, I am glad to share the experience. I had the same problem. At first I also thought it was the key that was faulty, I Went and bought new batteries, but it never worked. When a specialist checked, we found that the ignition system is the one that was faulty. When we replaced it (USD500.0), the problem was resolved.
The only complication is that when you change the ignition system, the key and the steering lock which is always a set has to be replaced, the key need to be programmed with the computer in the car so that it works. So I wish you the best. Julius ouma, Kampala, Uganda. Julius.ouma@ gmail.com

Not positive if it works on VW's but try locking/ unlocking the passenger door with the key. There are sensors in both doors.

one of the door sensors most likely the most used driver door is bad (faulty) using a proper scanner you can access the body control module and get this information. the sensor is located on the door lock mechanism, meaning lock might have to be replaced to fix problem.

Those components are probably part of a new lock assembly. Maybe locate a used lock to take those pieces from.

2001 VW Jetta 1.8L - Front RH Door Lock won't lock

I have a similar issue on a 2001 Jetta sedan. jandkat seems to be talking about the old system that VW used (pre-1998). To my knowledge there is no vacuum-based locks in the 2001 models. I've had the door completely apart and there are defiantly not any vacuum hoses. The only 100% for sure fix I have found is to replace the door latch mechanism. There are some other options but I'm not sure they would completely fix the issues you are having. Now for the bad news: you can only get this door latch mechanism from VW dealers. I have yet to find a place online or elsewhere that carries them. They are around $185 for the latching mechanism and if you don't want to install it, be prepared to pay another $200 or so in labor. If you do want to do it yourself, here is a great site that has step-by-step how to take a VW door apart: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1015107

Hope this helps
