Question about 1996 Pontiac Grand Am
Car would only start on occasion. jiggle shifter around everyonce in a while it would turn over. checked linkage and starter and neutral safety switch. Neutral saftey switch bracket was worn out and it was loose. So in positioning the switch we would kick the key over to make sure it would actually try and turn over. The last good normal crank the starter kicked and now it cranks real hard like battery is almost dead. battery is fine. pulled starter checked out fine. removed all the plugs at the same time and it cranked over just fine.
It will crank easier with plugs out because you've got no compression working against it. Take a good look at your cables to make sure they didn't heat up & burn off a few strands. Clean all connections good make sure they are 100%. You may have to have a draw test done on starter, just to see if maybe it's getting worn down. Only other thing that comes to mind is timing. If it's belt, & not too hard to pull cover & double check all marks are aligned, then I would do that.
