Question about Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

2000 Cavalier Starts/runs fine for 20 mins. Stalls won't start again till cools

Mechanic checked fuel pressure, filter. Couldn't get it to act up by idling for hrs. Checked for 5 days. Suspected Ignition module so I changed that,2 coils on top looked ok should i have change those as well. Ran for the usal 20-25 mins and stalled again on way to work.Near same place on up grade on Hwy. Should i look closer at fuel pump or Coils?

stopped on way home last night to check if it would start. took 3 pump primes to start ,ran fine most of the way stalled out on hill again 17 mins. down the road. this time it's got a 171 code PCM detects an excessively lean condition . Wouldn't run this morning , it turned over and fired a little bit but wouldn't stay running

If you have already had the fuel pump and ignition circuits checked, replaced or verified good, then there are only a couple options left...ALWAYS, check your grounds and powers to all the components, and then about all you have left is the PCM itself or the CKP Sensor. If that doesn't do it, ALWAYS look to the mechanical hard failures as well. Make sure that the Harmonic Balancer and the tone rings are in tact and in alignment.

Have you replaced your fuel filter recently or even checked fuel pressure?

The shop needs to record the computer data on a road test
or look at the freeze frame data, when you go there

The fuel pump wasn't scoped or pressure tested

I think you need a different shop that's up to speed & knows
how to use scan tools & oscilloscopes

If it idles for hours you stop doing that & drive it for 20 miles or more

And you wonder why shops don't find any issues, they don't drive
the cars far or at all or take the test equipment along

dropped the fuel tank and replaced original pump with 200,000miles on it. Ran it for 45mins with no issues today.

Did they figure out if you are loosing fuel or spark when it fails to start up ? You would need to know which to proceed.

Car runs perfect then starts missing real bad then stalls

Not unusual for fuel pumps to begin to fail once they are heated up from running. First thing in the morning pump is cool, then as you drive, it heats up and begins to lose pressure. After sitting a 1/2hr-1hr, it may start again and run fine for a short time and start to act up again. Had similar problem and found good fuel pressure when tank and pump cool, but lost pressure once vehicle driven a distance and pump heated up. The hotter the weather, the shorter the distance I could drive. If you can somehow set it up to have fuel pressure checked when it starts to act up, that would certainly help confirm if fuel pressure is the culprit.

did your mechaniic check the fuel injectors, it very possibly could be 1 of them acting up, also have your mechanic to give your vehicle a fuel pressure test, this will tell if the pressure is within the specs for the year and engine size that you have. also have him to check the coil, or coils, 1 of them could be heating up, and breaking down, and after cooled for a while, they have been known to work again, untill they heat up again. also have him to check the fuel pump relay to see if it is getting bad, he might have to tempoarily replace it with another one just to see if it is acting up.

Stalls while driving, shut car off n wait 20 seconds then car starts again till it stalls again. replaced cam n crank sensors but problem still exists,, is it the wiring or pcm now, please help

i think i would change the fuel filter first. also a plugged catalytic converter will act the same, i would check that second. the vehicle will run until it builds up back pressure and kills the engine. then with engine off the pressure gets relieved and it will start then the whole process will start again. check the pressure at your exhaust pipe.

Sounds like possible crank sensor failure, will work till warms up they have to cool, then will work again. Also monitor fuel preasure, fuel pumps can act this way too.
