Check your oil for coolant. Looks muddy or diluted. Check for air in the cooling system.

2003 pontiac grand am bleeding the cooling system

Look on your exhaust manifold. What you are looking for is a little bleed screw. Mine is painted blue. Yours maybe a different color. When you find it start your engine and let it idle for 3-5 minutes. Make sure your heat is turned on full. With the enging running turn bleed screw counterclockwise till water starts shooting out. Let the water continue to shoot out until you get a steady stream. Once you get that steady stream then tighten. Your system is now bled.

Is it a turbo diesel? It sounds like the turbo is shot. Black smoke and runs like **** a pretty sure signs.

What is the proper procedure for bleeding the cooling system after replacing the thermostat ?

none as such just fill it up to the top start engine and let it warm up a bit then top up when cool for a vehicle like this ,only old renaults and peugeots had bleed out oints on the heater hoses at the back of the engine or on top of the top hose like the old renault 4 .if its blowing out water then put a pressure tester on it to see if the pressure is building up when engine is started and first run .

How do I bleed the water system on a VW Kombi microbus....at the moment I blew the head due to overheating for the 2nd time....

To bleed the cooling system effectively you will need to use a cooling system charge unit.Your local VW Commercial dealer has this tool or it can be purchased from a reputable tool dealer e.g Snap-On,Mac,Sealey etc. When used with a compressed air feed, this tool applies a vacuum to the cooling system and draws ALL the air out before replenishing the coolant (this tool uses a sealed system so no chance of air entering system). This STOPS hot spots in the clinder head and turbo
