Question about 1997 Honda Civic

1 Answer

I think it's something with the fuel line.

I drive my car about a mile or two, and the gas will cut out for about 10 seconds. I will hear the engine rev, because I'm still moving in gear, but it has no power. After about 10 seconds the gas comes on again very strong, and the car will kick pretty hard from the power coming back. Then it's fine for however much longer I drive it.

It's quite possible the fuel pump is starting to fail or possibly even a dirty fuel filter

I replaced the fuel filter about 3 weeks ago, and the problem has stopped dramatically.

Trouble getting car started especially after made one or two stops

The fuel pump is definitely a possibility. I would start by checking fuel pressure cold and again when the problem is present. It should at least be 40 psi. If it's been 50k miles or more since the fuel filter has been changed I would suggest a new one.

Having problem with starting, appears it out of gas, or not firing, but will start if set for a while

That symptom can be a bad fuel pump, but is usually a bad crank position sensor. Have a helper turn the key to run position while you listen at the gas tank filler tube with cap removed. If you hear a 'hum' for a few seconds, probably not fuel pump , but a fuel pressure test at engine supply will eliminate bad pump pressure. If pressure OK, replace crank sensor. Seen this many times. Sensor will cause hard/no start condition and/or fail after engine heats up after 10-15 mile of driving.

I have a 95 gmc sonoma with a 98 engine in it i was driving down the road and pulled over when all of a sudden my truck shut off on me and wont start back up seems like its something to do with the gas if...

If its trying to start it could be the fuel pump. Try some start fluid. You should hear the fuel pump cut on when you turn on the ignition for about 2 seconds. If you have fuel check to make sure you have fire. Take a plug wire off and put a screwdriver in it and hold against something metal while turning the engine over. You may need help to do this.If you have fire then its timing. Could be the cashaft position sensor.

Sounds like you have a fuel pump failing or a clogged fuel line from a dirty filter. I would bring it to a garage and have the fuel system pressure checked. This will asnwer questions about weather or not this is the problem.

1991 geo metro car misses at high rpm

try this first. the older the car; the more problems the ethanol gas is causing. replace the fuel filter. you'll probably see what you think is dirty gas; it is; in a way. it's the ethanol goop that stays and ruins engines, and fuel systems. install the new filter. add a whole can of SEAFOAM to at least a half tank of premium gas. replace fuel filter before next 500 miles.add can of SEAFOAM every 3000 miles after that, and that will clean the valves, the goop, the carbon and keep your tank and lines free of moisture, It might take afew miles(depending on the clogging), but it should work. I hate ethanol gas.

Sounds like a faulty fuel pump to me.

On most vehicles with fuel injection, when you switch ignition ON the engine computer runs a fuel pump for a few seconds to pump initial gas pressure. You can hear it from the gas tank area - it's like a buzzing sound. It's not very loud and the gas pump works only for a second or two after switching the ignition ON, so you may need someone's assistance checking this. If there is no buzzing sound, something might be wrong with the fuel pump or its electrical circuit - bring your vehicle to the garage or a dealer.
