2001 ford expedition overheats when under load

Car overheats at highway speeds especially in warmer weather. radiator, thermostat and water pump have been replaced

    Check your heat sensors, especially the PRV valve. Also, I have replaced thermostat before and the new one was defective.

    I had a toyota celica that had a blown head gasket. I went through everything you list here and then some. Unfortunately my little motor had aluminum heads and I didn't figure out what the problem was until after the heads warped. I junked the car and started over.

No water pump issues I am aware off, are you sure you bled the air out of the cooling system? If not fill the overflow bottle all the way full, then use a floor jack and raise the front of the car as high as you can ( this allows air to go to top of radiator tank), then run the engine at high idle speed until the cooling fan ( I assume the fan works OK?) comes on, but avoid letting the engine get into the overheat area of the guage, if it does turn it off, run water over the radiator until it cools, check the tank and radiator, top off if you need to and repeat above procedure, if this doesn't work you have some other problem like no or little flow in radiator.

I have had this happen with my ranger. Changed everything I could to try to fix the over heating. It turned out that I had a small leak in my head gasket and it was allowing exsaust gas to go into the cooling system witch was over pressurizing it. Also the air from the exsaust will heat up much faster than liquid making your thermostat to read hot and will not be able to blow hot air in the cab because there is no liquid going to the heater core. This happened to me when my blet came off and I tryed to make it home. If you had it over heat for a long peirod of time it may have ripped the head gasket.

SOURCE: 2001 ford expedition electric fuel pump went out.

unfortunately it is not easy to replace. the pump is inside the fuel tank therefore the tank has to be removed to replace the pump.

I had the same problem with my 99 ford taurus. My ford taurus did exactly did same things that your vehicle is doing. runs cool on the freeway because the air is going through the radiator and cooling the water down.I checked the cooling fans, radiator and hoses for leaks also replaced my thermostat. nothing solved the problem. turns out that the new antifreeze does not come with a lubercant property any longer. you have to buy the lubercant additive separately and then add it to your cooling system when you replace the antifreeze. the lubercant protects your freeze plugs, water pump, radiator, thermastat from rusting out. Meanwhile because of the absents of the lubercant, my water pump impellers rusted out and dissolved. so the water pump had no fins to circulate the water. Luckly for me, I discovered that my car was still under warranty due to an extended warranty I had purchased when I bought the car. ford dealership replaced the water pump. Problem Solved.

Well you could have a bad water pump that is not circulating the water right while you driving you car on high speed but if you wan to try if is the thermostat take off and drive the car like that if the problem goes away just put a new thermostat

2001 mustang...6 cylinder. Car overheats at slow driving speeds with ac on. Temp goes to the H on temp guage, but not over redline but almost. Electric fan running. Ford dealer flushed radiator and changed...


Check that the water pump drive belt is tight
Check that the cylinder head is not blowing.
Check the impleor on the water pump is not eroded
Check theair flow through the radiator is ok.
Check electric cooling fans operates if fitted.
Are you driving in to low a gear?
Are the brakes draging?
Check to see if you have some contaninated fuel
Check that the correct ignition time is ocurring at all engine speeds.

2000 EXPEDITION OVERHEATING 4 MILE AFTER LEAVING HOME NEW RADIATOR, FLUSH, AND NEW THERMOSTAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS


Here are a few things to try. Check your Radiator cap pressure as a weak cap will boil over more quickly. Replace your Temperature sending unit. There may be 2, one is for the dash gauge and the other is for engine control. Unless you have other signs of overheating you may not be overheating at all, just a bad sender.

Next, the cooling fan clutch is what the fan blade is mounted on. This is checked by using a Timing light with a RPM tach made into it. The fan clutch "locks" at a variable temperature. In cold weather it slips internally. In hot weather it engages or "locks". A mechanic measures the RPM of the blade to the RPM of the engine. This tells if the fan clutch is slipping too much internally.

Before considering a new water pump try a free scan at Autozone or Oreillys. If your Catalytic converters are plugged the engine will overheat. You should have a Code for this problem in the onboard computer. About all you can try after this is to remove the Thermostat completely and see if the engine still overheats.

You will have to replace the New Thermostat again because the other engine controls will not work right without it. But without the thermostat you can test for collapsed Radiator hoses at say 2500RPM or above. Thats about all I can think of, the water pump would cost the most. The cap, sensor-sender, fan clutch, and hoses are not that expensive.

96 tracker overheats at highway speeds temp ok at idle or low speed. Replaced water pump thermostat flushed rad checked hoses. any ideas?


Presurize system with radiator cap on to see if you are holding 10 to 13 LB pressure as high as 17 LB. Get new radiator cap for your radiator. Check for a slow leak at pump hose thermostat conection , is it wet ?

1989 Ford Escort GT overheating


Sounds like to me it would be your water pump before a heater core. When the water pump goes out, it stops pumping the coolant through the system which is what would cause it to still overheat even with the thermostat out.
