That is one of the 1st things you check.

This is pretty vague. Obviously if you tried starting fluid then fuel is probably not the issue. It takes 3 things to make an engine run: Spark. Fuel. Compression. I would look towards spark in this case. Start by pulling the coil wire and setting it against a ground while cranking. NO SPARK? Pull the distributor cap. (and or replace. cheap fix). If the fuel pump runs then it is RARE that the ignition module is faulty because it's on the same circuit. Best bet is secondary ignition. WIRES, PLUGS, ROTOR, CAP. And I will ALWAYS say...check ALL your power and grounds.

Best do a fuel pressure test. Should have chg. fuel filter from the get go. The only other filter is on the end of the fuel pump in tank. Bad gas and dirty gas will plug up fuel filter, hense burn pump up.

if you really have a carburetor as you say, you have a mechanical fuel pump so you will not have a fuel pump relay. if you have fuel injection then you do have a fuel pump relay, need to know which engine it is to help more.

SOURCE: 2002 Chevy Express 2500, 5.0. Cranks but won't

FUEL PRESSURE MUST BE 62 LBS. OR GREATER OR IT WILL NOT GROUND INJECTORS, IF ITS OK THEN CHECK YOUR GRAY 12V SUPPLY TO PUMP AT CRANK-UP, YOU MAY HAVE A POOR IGNITION SWITCH.

My '97 chevy s-10 won't start

Check to see if the fuel pump runs for a few seconds when you first turn the key to the "run" position. You should be able to hear it if you put your ear to the gas cap while someone turns the key. It will run for 3 or 4 seconds and then stop.
Check for spark. Easiest way it to hook a timing light to any wire and turn the engine over. There are many reasons for no spark. Most common being the coil, sensors, MAF etc.
If the fuel pump isn't running. Check fuses, wires, and finally... change the fuel pump if all else fails. You would be well advised to find one at an auto wrecker if you can. They are expensive.

How do you check and change a camshaft position

The camshaft sensor wouldn't explain the clattering noise. But a timing chain would explain both. Clattering from a loose chain and the camshaft sensor code from when the chain broke and the camshafts stopped turning.

Could be several problems with a car that old:

1. Weak coil
2. Failing fuel pump
3. Failing crank sensor
4. Failing mass airflow sensor

Fuel pump? That is odd, it seems there is no issue with getting fuel. I would check the idle and the choke settings. Try tweaking those a bit.
