Question about Chevrolet Impala

2002 chevy impala won't pass OBDII tests

I bought this car thinking all it had was an oil leak. I take it to get smogged and I was told I had a faulty catalytic converter but my engine light wasn't on (probably the past owner disconnected the battery to erase the codes). I put a new one then finally the engine light came on. I got that fixed even bought a new battery and my car still says not complete on the cat test and the evaporation test. I've put a lot of miles on it. Please help!!!

SOURCE: 2000 Saturn SL2 fails smog due to failure of OBD Self test

Some vehicles require very specific drive cycles (called "drive traces" if you perform them on a road simulator or dyno) to activate certain self-checks like the catalyst and EVAP monitors. As a general rule, doing some stop-and-go driving around town at speeds up to about 30 mph followed by five to seven minutes of steady 55 mph highway speed driving will usually set most or all of the monitors. Consequently, if you're checking an OBD II system and discover that one or more of the monitors have not run, it may be necessary to test drive the vehicle to set the remaining monitors.

You should talk to a good emission tec, if this is not throwing a code, it is hard to say if that one of the components could be bad. O2,pump,convert, HeO2, every part of the emission system.

With a 1000 miles, and doing what is says above just before the test, and ending driving at the test
should be plenty. If it is not, you will have to have each emission part checked, or when the computer
is plugged in it might show a code that did not trip dash light.

SOURCE: The ?check engine? light came on, what does this

You will never pass a smog test if a check engine light is on. The light being on says you failed before they did anything to your vehicle. Take the vehicle to your local autozone. Autozone will scan the vehicles computer and get the codes that are causing the issue, and they will do it for free. After you make the repairs, you will need to get the computer reset. Autozone will also reset it for you for free.

SOURCE: My 2002 VW Jetta failed smog due to MIL/Check

if this vehicle is driven in the city almost exclusively, take it out on the freeway a good 30-40 miles prior to taking it back to the smog shop. that should prime all the readiness sensors. make sure your doing some speed and not just going 55 in the slow lane. get the system nice and hot.

White smoke comes out tailpipe when I romp on gas. wont pass smog visual test

Visual test fail is visual white smoke out of the tail pipe?
The engine seems to be burning something it shouldn't, such as coolant, brake fluid, oil. It may have a check engine light on or may not. Give it a leak down test and check for blown gaskets. Look it up in youtube or google it.

I have a 2005 chevy impala 3.4L no leaks, new thermostat, been flushed, overheats, we suspect cracked head and/or gaskets?

Do a compression check on all cylinders to verify blown head gasket. If there is water/fluid on your oil dipstick, you can skip the compression test - it\'s blown. No water/fluid? Do a compression check. Pass compression test? Check your oil pump. After that???? Perhaps a vacuum test to see what is going on. Or finally, (wouldn\'t be the first time I have seen it), have your new thermostat tested. Some are junk right out of box - especially aftermarket brands.

I just bought a 93 jeep cherokee...it won't pass smog, smog test says its running to rich at idle. How can I get it to pass smog?

Could be lots of things.
It could have a leaky injector that is dripping all the time.
You can pull the injectors while still on the fuel lines, to see.
You could have bad compression and burning oil.
You need to do a compression test to tell.
You could have a bad plug or wire.
They are cheap to so just change them.
The fuel injection system could be off.
Check the temp sensor, air mass sensor, O2 sensor, with an ohmmeter.
Don't remember the values, but bad ones usually go 0 or infinite.

My GMC 2003 Envoy failed smog test because of "the

The person running the test is an idiot. The OBDII test instrument is not capable of determining if there is a warning lamp failure. It is probably guessing based on voltage level, but lamp resistance does normally vary. The test is supposed to be done visually. Take it to someone else, and they will probably be more competent and pass your car.

On these vans the light will stay on untill it is reset. You need a OBD 2 scanner to reset it. You can take it to the dealer and have them do it but they will probably charge you like $130. The best thing for you to do is check with an auto parts store. They normally have a scanner on hand and will turn it off for you free of charge. Advance and Autozone I know pretty much have a scanner at every store.
