SOURCE: overheating engine: termo guage at the middle during idle

The Temp gauge should read in the middle of the gauge at operating temperature. This is normal. The radiator fan should come on after idling (not driving) for 20 minutes. The fan should also come on when you turn on the AC. Are you experiencing overheat problems?

When the vehicle overheats, do u check the water/coolant level in the radiator? If it has reduced, it means ur leaking and u should inpsect to c where the leak is coming from. If the level has remained the same, probably ports are blocked or something to that effect. Keep me posted though

SOURCE: 2002 Chevrolet Impala overheating while idling

the thermostates on the 3400 engines are late because the fans kick in at the last moment. if you run your ac on you will notice that the gauge stays in front of the half mark or right on the half mark. that is because when you turn on your ac your fans will kick in earlier and stay on the whole time the ac is on. if you run your car with the heat on or nothing on that leaves the late thermostate to kick in verus you turning on your ac and it by passes the thermostates and runs the fans once the engine gets at at lest 120 deg. i use to have a 2002 and i had the same problem. this will keep your engine cooler. also if you don't want your air on just turn on your windshield defrosters (not the back windshield) and that helps keep your engine cool because your defrosters use your air compressor which is really your ac. so it still kicks the fans on earlier.

Replaced thermostat and new coolant on 2004 suzuki forenza due to overheating problems doing driving on freeway or street as soon as i leave home. Problem stop one day then the next day i had some rough...

there are only 2 ways to overheat,
and vast causes !
1: engine making too much heat.
a: eg. cam/spark timiing way off. eg retarded timing does that.
2: Cooling system failure.

just 2. finding out which one takes tests.
I do my engine checks first.
A; compression. ok
b; timing right.
C: egr closing,
d: cat not melted closed down (huge backpressure, "guaged"

then when happy my engines happy,
I then attack the cooling system.
Thermostat new, and not put in wrong,
wax side to input side,RTM, bleed hole high (jiggle pin, etc)
I use an IR pyro gun $15 to check ALL rad tubes top and bottom
so see if one or more is clogged,, this is easy, ask.

does it over heat parked at a read light
does it never fail moving fast.
these are the top clues.
only fails A/C on?
fans all work, some have 3 on A/C cars up front.

the question is, , is the stalling caused by overheating or is only a victim. only you know that, as you are driving.
if you see bad running before the oveheat, then its just that.
is the car pinging?
engines that ping overheat and blow pistons.
engines that overheat can ping.
but in the latter, it overheats FIRST.
see?

Overheats ive tried the obvious solutions and it still overheats any suggestions

note if it overheats on the freeway or in city driving. If it overheats soon after you leave the house then in has to be the thermostat. If it overheats at city driving where there are lots of stop and go driving or while you are parked with the motor running, then check the radiator fan function properly. If it takes a while to overheat and tend to do it when driving on the freeway, it is a clogged/dirty radiator. If it looses coolant due to a leak, then it will also overheat. The least likely cause which don't even pertain to newer car is a retarted timing. A retarted timing causes a car to loose noticable loose of power accompanied by overheating. A retartded timing is usually common in older car where timing is adjustable by turning the distributor. Your car is exempt from this.

Classic signs of a bad water pump. When on the freeway, the circulation of coolant through the system is increased due to the speed but once you slow down, it will tend to overheat. Please post back with any other questions or just to rate the solution. Thanks very much!
