SOURCE: can not turn the key .on my 1996 toyota camry

First, check to see if the front wheels are turned in either direction and have exrternal pressure on them; such as resting against the curb. If that's the case, then your problem is that the wheels (and steering wheel) are under pressure and you need to counter-act that pressure in order to turn the ignition lock. So make a note of the direction of the front wheels....you'll need to muscle the steering wheel in the opposite direction. So do this....with the key in the ignition, take your left hand and try to turn the wheel in the opposirte direction that the wheels are turned. At the same time, take your right hand and try to turn the ignition lock. If the front wheels are under a great deal of pressure, it may take some muscle to turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction, but all you need is a small amount to release the pressure on the ignition lock abnd allow you to turn the key. Try it. Good luck.

Is your steering wheel locked? Turn the key as much as you can, then turn the steering wheel and see if it releases the lock. You should be able to completely turn the key after this.

What can I do to unlock the steering column on my 1996 Toyota Camry?

When the car started rolling it locked it up tight. Try putting the car in neutral, put the key in and push against the car in the opposite direction that it rolled while you turn the key and jerk on the steering wheel. You will need to slightly roll the car back to get it unlocked. Get a buddy to help you push the car if you can.

KEY WON'T TURN ON THE IGNITION

Hi Aldene, Your vehicle seems too young to have a problem with a worn key so I suggest that the problem was related to the position of the steering wheel and the tongue of the locking mechanism. Sometimes when the lock engages it is under the load of the weight of the front wheels, if they are not in the straight ahead position. A small movement of the steering wheel is usually enough to release the steering lock. Regards John

I have a 2000 Toyota Camry. The key is stuck in the lock position and won't turn, do I need a new ignition?

Try turning the steering wheel, fairly firmly, while trying the key. Sometimes a significant preload happens when the power assist is helping the wheel positioning, just prior to shutdown.

96 camry ignition key very hard to turn. have to violently jiggle, turn wheel, stomp brakes to get ignition to turn. is it ignition, steering lock, breaks?

Have you tried getting a new key cut? Worn keys can do that. Other than that I would say a worn out ignition lock cylinder. Mike

1996 camry le 6 cylinder. cannot get ignition key to turn to start car. gear is in park and have tried adjusting steering wheel

Hi the steering lock could be causing you the problem try turning the steering wheel hard left whilst turning the key and do the same hard right.

it may be hard to turn but you should find once you have moved it slightly it will unlock allowing you to turn the key so dont adjust the steering wheel turn it to the right as if your trying to turn to the right and if this dont let the key turn turn the wheel to the left it only needs to move slightly to allow the steering lock to free the key,

doing the above should solve you problem

give me a shout back if you have any further problems ok

Look for a certified diagnostic centre so your car can be properly checked. I suspect that it has a security code issue. It can only be corrected that way. Try it out and get back to me. +2348023080045
