There is a special tool to lock the shaft which drives the water pump, then the small pulley on the end can be removed. You can slide the belt off the water pump pulley with the fins if you are careful, then the belt can be wiggled off the bottom small drive pulley. It can be a bit of a pain but it can be done.

it's not an easy job. and requires removal of many components in the front of the engine.  However, you can go the the public libuary an look up a Haynes or Chilton auto repair manual.  Good luck and you'll need a good set of tools and this would also be an excellent time to change the timing belt.

relatively easy. just weave the belt over, under and around the pulleys the way its show on the belt patter on the label on the radiator., or make note before pukking off old one. Good luck. Watch the fingers!

The previous solution offered is most likely correct. However, in the event that you discover that the timing belt is not at fault, here are some things to consider:
There is a slight possibility that the spark plugs are not firing. Check your distributor cap and electrical connection to the spark plugs to be sure that current is being delivered to them. A power failure to the spark plugs would exactly mirror these symptoms: A sudden engine failure, but a working electrical system that cranks the engine. The fact that the engine turns over indicates that there is nothing else wrong with the electrical system. With continued attempts to start it, however, the battery will eventually die. Keep an eye on that and make sure you have access to an assisting car or a booster kit in that event.
This brings into question the fuel system. If the engine is attempting to start with no result, it is possible that fuel is not being delivered to the engine cylinders correctly (again, this is also in keeping with the previous solution, so make sure to double check the timing belt first). Possible culprits are: the fuel injectors, the fuel sending unit (fuel pump), or the fuel filter. It is unlikely that the fuel injectors have malfunctioned so quickly and totally. Check your fuel filter first, as it is the easiest of the three to inspect. It is usually located along the fuel line between the gas tank and the engine.
If none of these systems are malfunctioning, you will need to look deeper with the assistance of a qualified technician. Make sure, in any event, to connect your car's OBDII system to a diagnostic utility to read any warnings or alerts that the car's computer is indicating.

The valve timing must be out. You will need to verify that the timing marks on your camshaft sprocket(s) are set at the correct position when you rotate the engine to the compression stroke on TDC.

On these vehicles, the timing belt is recommended at 90K!! I recommend replacing the T-belt and water pump at the same time. The water pump is timing belt driven, and if it fails, you would be paying for another Timing belt service!! YOU WILL NOT experience drive-ability issues because the belt is aged or has not been serviced at its recommended intervals. Instead, if the belt fails, your engine will fail, and will require replacement or rebuilt ($3500+ job). Find a less expensive reliable shop thats experienced in EURO vehicles, and stay away from the dealer!!

It takes near to 1.5 hours to replace the water pump on Pontiac Aztec. The procedure to replace the water pump is as follows:--- Water Pump Replacement ---------
Removal Procedure :

  1. Drain the cooling system until the coolant is below the level of the water pump.
  2. Remove the drive belt guard.
  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove the drive belt.

  2. Remove the water pump pulley.

  2. Remove the water pump.
  3. Remove the water pump gasket.
  4. Clean the water pump mating surfaces
Installation Procedure
  1. Install the water pump gasket.
  2. Install the water pump. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
  3. Install the water pump bolts.
    • Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) .

  2. Install the drive belt.
  3. Install the water pump pulley bolts.
    • Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (18 inch lbs.) .

Auxiliary drive belt also need to replace the tensioner pulley and idler pulley no you won't need to redo the timing as it is a different system

1993 90: 1993 water pump location...


Water pump sits in the front of the engine top centerline. Look just below the coil pack. It uses the timing v-belt for operation so it takes a bit of mechanical know how to remove/replace (r&r) it, as the timing can be thrown off if the v-belt is not reinstalled correctly. Get past the timing belt, the water pump is r&r is just a few bolts away. I'm currently babying my water pump...the part is relatively inexpensive compared with an almost $500 labor charge (5hrs, dealer est.) to replace it. I'll be hitting up the dealer as my '93 Audi 90 CS Quattro is a daily driver. G/L

If it's anything like the six cylinder engines from Audi, which I'm very familiar with, and from what I remember of the V8, you have a timing belt that drives the water pump, crank, and exhaust cams, and also includes a tensioner and an idler roller. The timing chains come into play in the cylinder heads. What Audi did was to only drive the exhaust cams off of the crank, using the timing belt, and inside each cylinder head there is a timing chain assembly that is used to drive the intake cams off the exhaust cams. On a periodic service (like the timing service) you only need to do the timing belt. The timing chains are only replaced if the tensioners fail - you'll know this by a diesel-like clatter from the cylinder heads. Failure of the chain drive assemblies is very rare, which is good because they're incredibly expensive (on the V6 engines they're upwards of $700 each). If you're doing this job because it's due based on mileage, don't touch the timing chains in the cylinder heads - only change the timing belt, tensioner roller, relay arm, hydraulic tensioner, idler pulley, water pump, and serpentine belt. You can leave the chains alone.

Yes the water pump does run of the timing belt system.
Directly from the service manual:

The 3.5L water pump has a die cast aluminum
housing and a plastic swept vane impeller. It bolts
directly to the right rear timing belt cover using an
O-ring for sealing. The water pump is
driven by the engine timing belt.

REMOVAL
The water pump on all models can be replaced
without discharging the air conditioning system.
WARNING: DO NOT REMOVE PRESSURE CAP
WITH THE SYSTEM HOT AND UNDER PRESSURE
BECAUSE SERIOUS BURNS FROM COOLANT CAN
OCCUR.

NOTE: It is normal for the water pump to weep a
small amount of coolant from the weep hole (black
stain on water pump body). Do not replace the
water pump if this condition exists. Replace the
water pump if a heavy deposit or a steady flow of
engine coolant is evident on water pump body from
the weep hole (shaft seal failure). Be sure to perform
a thorough analysis before replacing water
pump.

(1) Drain cooling system (Refer to 7 - COOLING -
STANDARD PROCEDURE).

(2) Remove accessory drive belts (Refer to 7 -
COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS -
REMOVAL).

NOTE: The water pump is driven by the timing belt.

(3) Remove engine timing belt (Refer to 9 -
ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT AND
SPROCKETS - REMOVAL).

(4) Remove water pump mounting bolts (Fig. 31).
Note position of longer bolt for proper re-installation.

(5) Remove water pump body from engine

Audi a4 2ltr tdi 140. engine has a chatter only when hot . removed aux belt but noise still there. sounds like a pulley chatter. vehicle drives and performs a1.


Just a guess.. could be bearings of (external) belt castors squeaking when hot (= dry). What is the mileage? May need to replace a pulley or so...

I had something like this once with the water pump of my 2,5 TDi and I replaced the pump preventively ($120 I think), problem was solved.
