Why wont my clutch will not engage

My clutch pedal go to the floor and wont engage

Your car has a "hydraulic operated" clutch.

Get under the car and look for a leak around the hydraulic line.
If so, you need a new line.

While underneath, pull the rubber "boot" off the "slave" cylinder (at the bell housing) and look to see if it's leaking.
If so, you need to either rebuild the slave cylinder, or replace it with a new/rebuilt unit.

Check the clutch master cylinder to see if its leaking.

SOURCE: I have a 1992 chevy

not sure on that model if it is cabel check conectoins posible broken cable,,but i think it was hydrolic ,causes could master cylinder on firewall internal leak check fluid can leak inside under dash,also check slave cylinder for leak or burst,leaking hose or pipe,but first check fluit level on top of master cylinder

If your fluid was low (which is why you likely added some,) you may need to "bleed" your clutch master cylinder.

hydraulic clutches are designed so you dont need to adjust , i would say you clutch plate (pressure plate) needs replacing

engaging?
you meant dis-engage im sure.
pedal up is engaged,
pedal at floor dis-engages it.
my guess, is the clutch drags unless i push the clutch pedal 100%
to the floor.
1: bad cable is 90% cause. non last this long.
2: no free play is way too loose.
3: broken lever on the pedal top. caused by #1

If your fluid was low (which is why you likely added some,) you may need to "bleed" your clutch master cylinder.

Clutch pedal travel


Your pedal height may be adjustable by a stopper bolt at top of pedal. You would have to check the specification for your car. Most important that the pedal has about a half inch free travel before clutch begins to engage. You need that free play to ensure the release bearing (the throw-out bearing) is not touching the fingers on the pressure plate when not engaged. If it always is touching, it will be rolling around constantly and will go out prematurely.
Your new clutch will allow gear engagement sooner as the clutch pedal is released. I mean gears will engage just as pedal is lifting off from floor. You should notice that difference-the old clutch would have taken longer pedal travel from floor before releasing.

Clutch will not engage when it was engaging perfectly to begin with.


Your car has a hydraulic clutch release system, it is defective, either the master or slave cylinder is leaking or pulling in air and this causes the clutch pedal to go to the floor.

My clutch pedal used to be pretty stout and the clutch would engage at about the midway point to the floor. All of a sudden the clutch pedal is pretty free to the floor where the clutch now engages. what...


sounds to me like the clutch master cylinder might be bad usually this happens when the line or the clutch master cylinder leaks fluid and you lose pressure to your clutch pedal...you should have a hydraulic clutch on this truck...if its leaking it will need to be replaced its located under the truck usually on the drivers side mounted on the transmission bell housing...hopes this helps

believe it or not, the floormat on my 2000 Sunfire will sometimes slip forward and hold the clutch pedal down against the floor. It truly feels like a mechanical problem, but simply pull the floormat away and the pedal pops right back up!
