You probably are not getting the starter installed correctly. You can purchase SHIMS for this to get the starter aligned properly. The fly wheel will sustain damage if this continues.

Bleed right side valve on caliper and have someone step gently down on brake. close bleeder. repeat till no air comes out. Repeat on drivers side. Keep master cyl full while doing this.
Grinding noise can come from bad starter drive gear, bad flywheel teeth or misaligned starter. You have to check this...I can't see that far!!! Best way to see flywheel teeth is to remove starter and turn engine by hand while looking into starter hole.

you do not say that you got the vehicle in this condition so i am guessing that everything worked just fine for a while then all of a sudden it did this. it would be nice if you still had the starter that did work when you got the truck but i'm sure you turned it in for a core several starters ago. it may have had a different number of teeth on the gear that spins out and engages than the ones you are buying at the car parts store. if somebody changed the flywheel at some point in the life of the truck and used the starter that went to that flywheel that would cause the situation you describe. the only other thing i can imagine is the spacing on the starter, like maybe it needs to be shimmed to work properly. the way to check that is with a feeler gage after you bolt the starter up, but that is mostly general motors vehicles, probably not your truck. here is a way that you can check to make sure you have the right flywheel for your truck: get a paint pen or something that makes a mark you can see on the metal of the flywheel. now with the starter off get under the truck and make a mark on a tooth of the flywheel that you can see where it is when you start. oh yeah, you will need some help to do this. let the tooth you mark be number one. now have someone rotate the engine slowly (you might disconnect the coil so you don't accidentally start it, but you probably won't) and count the teeth on the flywheel, till that number one tooth comes back around. when you know what the number is on your flywheel call a parts store or the dealership and keep talking to people till you get somebody to tell you how many teeth it should be for your truck. if it doesn't match what you have then you know where the problem lies. at that point you can either replace the flywheel or figure out which starter goes to the one you have. if you already have the right one then i would check the tooth clearance. you should have .020 inch between starter gear teeth and flywheel teeth with starter fully extended. to check this you will have to connect the battery but loosely, bump the starter switch to get the starter to spin up and yank the battery negative while it is spun out. you can get the .020 check gage at a car parts store. hope that helps

First do not let this problem go for a long time it will destroy the teeth on the flywheel making it necessary to replace the flywheel $$$, the starter is wrong it is not extending far enough forward to fully engage the flywheel teeth, when ordering the new starter make sure they don't give you the same part # in regards to the starter, it is possible that the starter is just defective but if you install the replacement and the same symptom occurs they are giving you the wrong starter. It is also possiblr that a shim was left out during the reassembley of clutch/flywheel/trans.

If it is sounding like its crashing into something then it means the teeth on the flywheel that the starter engages into is bad this calls for removing the transmission to replace the flywheel, But before doing that make sure there is no space between the engine and the transmission the engine bolts might have come loose Let me know if you need any more help on this.

If you mean the starter grinds from time to time and won't crank the engine when it happens, the problem could be a bad spot on the flywheel and/or a faulty starter. The starter uses a magnet and bendix gear to push the starter gear into the flywheel. If the magnet or bendix is weak, the gear will not engage and can damage the teeth on the flywheel.
You need to have the starter removed and check the flywheel teeth for damage.

To inspect the teeth on the ring gear requires the inspection to check the full 360 degrees of the ring gear. Looking past the inspection cover to examine a small portion of the ring gear may reveal no issues, but only for that section. Eventually the ring gear will end up positioned above the starter drive gear which will skip across the bad teeth creating your grinding noise when you try and start the Astro,.

if the starter was grinding when starting then the problem is the starter drive not engaging the flywheel could be worn out(starter drive)replace the starter and check the flywheel for worn or damaged teeth when the starter is off the car.

I have a 1996 astro van...when i go to start and turn ignition it makes this real bad grinding sound? could it be the flywheel or the starter ?

It could be either the flywheel or the starter.
If it's grinding, don't try it again until you've removed and examined the starter and flywheel. If the starter solenoid isn't fully engaging the bendix, it will cause the gear to grind; replace or rebuild the starter if that's the case.
But you should examine the flywheel to see if it is seriously damaged from the problems you've had. Put a mark on the flywheel using a magic marker, then examine the flywheel as you slowly turn the engine by hand. (make certain that the ignition is off when you do that, you don't want anything bad to happen to your hand.) The mark on the flywheel will indicate when you've been able to examine the all of the teeth on the starter ring.

2 possible things, 1. the contacts in the solinoid on the starter are bad, it would still test good but wouldnt have enouph power to engage the flywheel, replace starter, or 2. bad flywheel, teeth on flywheel are worn or broken, both require removal of starter, remove starter first inspect flywheel for damage, if none replace starter.

From what you describe I would suspect that the starter is not fully engaging. I'm assuming that the grinding noise you hear when you try to engage the starter is INSTEAD of the engine cranking. If I assumed wrong, ignore the following:
Pull the starter, check the flywheel for excessively worn areas. Most of the time the flywheel is ok, it's just the starter. Any time you disassemble a starter you should replace the bushings and brushes. Never remove the starter with the battery still connected. Remove the negative terminal from the battery before you attempt to remove the starter.

You have a grinding noise when it's running or when you try to start it?
There is an inspection cover just behind the oil pan of the engine. If you remove it you can see the teeth on the flywheel. Chances are that the flywheel may still be good and the starter drive (part of starter) may be failing. If so and you leave it that way it will damage the flywheel. On automatic cars it's called a flex plate. And yes if you have a chrysler trans on there the converter may have the ring gear welded on.

Problem with ignition switch, starter, flywheel

that sounds correct what happens is the starter still tries to engage the flywheel and grinds the teeth off both. Replace switch then worry about starter flywheel if it starts fine don't worry about it you may have saved it if you didn't let it run that way long

Grinding noise when trying to start car.

hello first thing you need to do is take your starter out the starter drive gear either has busted teeth or the flywheel does with the starter removed mark the flywheel with chalk crayon so you no were you started from look at the teeth good keep turning the motor by hand checking till you come back to the original mark you made if there are no chips or missing teeth look at the look at the starter drive teeth there most likely busted or chewed down replace the starter goodluck please rate
