Question about 1988 Volkswagen GTI

Fixya car vehicle struggles to start in the morning. IF if starts i need to keep my foot on it to let it idle . If engin is hot, no problem to start.

TAKE OUT THE THROTLE CONTROL VALVE LOCATED AT THE BYPASS HOSE CLEAN IT.IF PROBLEM PERSISTS CKECK IF U HAVE POWER ON ONE OF THE TWO CABLES!!BE CAREFULL CHEC WITH A MULTIMETER!!!!!RED TO CABLE AND BLACK TO BATTERY GROUND.IF OK THEN REPLACE THE VALVE.

Could be a faulty fuel pump, they are notorious for acting unpredictibly when they start to go bad. My bet is in a week it won't start at all. Try banging on the fuel tank the next time it won't start, if that fixes it it is prbably a fuel pump.

Running you fuel pump until its at E is hard/bad on your fuel pump since gasoline is the fuel pumps lubrication.

Definitely not the fuel pump. A fuel pump will either work, or it wont. It could be a fuel filter, though unlikely, again if it was clogged there would be nothing. Could be spark plugs/wires, a faulty coil pack, Could also be a handful of sensors (o2, MAF, are a few that come to mind). Does it have a manual transmission? If so can the car be started without engaging the clutch (in neutral)? If so check the 2 clutch sensors attached to the clutch pedal.

Probably a sensor. Go to Advanced Auto parts and have them pull the code. Then google it. Or check out Forums.vwvortex.com

Most likely there is a hole in the air tube. Open the hood and check the rubber tube on top of the engine. If there is a rip, just cover it with some heavy duty tape and it will help on a tempory basis.

Ignition system sounds probable on vhicle when everything gets warmed up. High pitched hum could be bad tire or worse bearing.

Vehicle started sludgish after cranking once during the weekend


By now I would guess you have replaced the battery in the vehicle. Batteries always struggle during winter if they are getting old or run down after a lot of short runs and use of the heater blower, windscreen wipers, electric rear window heater and headlights.
Nothing beats a garaged car for being easy on the battery........and giving it at least a 10 mile run every weekend at speed keeps the condensation out of the engine, oil and exhaust systems.

1999 toyota 4runner, 140K miles: for 2 weeks, have problem starting when cold in morning. takes 3-4 clicks and foot on gas pedal to start. now also problem starting when warm after driving for 30mins....


Sounds like a sticky throttle if you can't keep idle. It won't hurt to try.... you can try a quick cheap trick by spraying a little carbon remover (buy at any auto store i.e. autozone, oreiley's) inside the throttle, open the valve, spray just small amount, close it back up and rev it a few times and repeat. It removes the carbon film after long use. fixed my idle issue in my cars. If its really bad you might have to clean it thoroughly but i highly doubt you have to do that.

it just needs the tick over turned up a bit on first start up its still running on choke,,, fast tick over,,,
when the choke comes off it starts to stall on you,,, yes?
the tick over should be set at 750 - 850 rpm (in gear when hot) when makeing any ajustments to the tick over keep the hand brake and foot brake hard on,,,

Truck struggles to start, then runs fine until I come to a stoplight. Take foot off of accelerator & shift into neutral. Truck will not idle; cuts off & will immediately restart but not idle.


It sounds like your balance belt might be broken. I have a 1991 Mighty Max that experienced the same problem. My water pump started leaking and as I was replacing it, I discovered the balance belt was also broken after removing many parts on the front of the engine in getting to the water pump. It's a small rubber belt that turns opposite of the crankshaft to keep the engine from shaking at idle. My engine is still torn down, as I don't know how to replace the balance belt. Sure could use some advice on this repair.

Car wont start


when you press the brake pedal the brake master cylinder vacuum booster takes vacuum away from the engine and that slows the idle speed just enough to trigger the low pressure oil light. Pull the oil pressure sending unit out and hook up an oil pressure test gage, if the pressure is above 15 PSI hot engine idle in drive replace the oil pressure sending unit.

Engine keeps dying after I turn it on.


I had the same problem when I did battery maintenance on my 1988 Montero Sport. The problem was explained to me, that the car's electronic pollution control computer data was erased when the battery is disconnected or the battery totally discharges. The car's computer uses this data to regulate idle speed and other engine factors. The solution given to me was to recheck the battery connections (make sure they are clean, and tighten down), start the vehicle, and just let it sit and idle for about 15 - 20 minutes (without racing the engine or driving the vehicle). This will rebuild and repopulate the car's computer engine data it needs to make adjustments. Hope this helps.
