SOURCE: Coolant overflow tank V8

To replace the Coolant overflow tank is not difficult.
You only need a few tools to disconnect the plastic container from the mounting bracket. Just be sure to do this while the engine is off and coolant cold. Check the tubes inside and out to assure no cracking or deterioration. If found defective replace. These are inexpensive and easy to cut to length using the old tubes as guides.
Hope this helps good luck!

You still have a lot of air in the cooling system and you have to speed up the water pump to get any coolant to flow through the heater. Let the engine cool off, then open the radiator cap and top off the radiator. Pour the coolant in at a rate slow enough to let the air bubble up without splashing the coolant back out. Once you get the coolant level up to the top overflow hose, the remaining air will be pushed out by expansion through the overflow tank once the engine gets hot, and will be replaced by coolant from the tank on cool-down.

you may have too much coolant in it... oddly enough,. I've seen entire cooling systems (and even the engine get replaced) and it still over heated -- when in fact it was an all of a sudden the car required a larger radiator -- and the (freaky) problem was fully solved,. in your case it may be a larger holding/ overflow tank?

I borrowed a friends car (2002 Thunderbird). The coolant gauge spikes from acceptable range up to hot "H", red light comes on for about 20 sec and then turns off and gauge goes back to normal. ...

What you are describing sounds like there is air in the cooling system-Start the engine when it is cold with the cap off of the overflow and turn the heater up to full blast-make sure there is coolant in the reservoir, and keep an eye on the gauge, At the point where the thermostat opens, the level in the overflow should drop-top off the overflow filling to the 'full hot' mark on the side of the tank. Put the cap back on and drive it, watching the gauge. If you still have issues, you may have a problem with a malfunctioning thermostat. If it is alright after doing this, make it a point to check the level when it is cold again later to be sure the coolant tank is up to the 'fill cold' line.

How difficult is it to replace coolant resesvoir on a 2001 Lincoln LS with V8 engine

Typically reservoirs have a few bolts on the top and /or sides and a push in mount on the bottom and a hose going from the bottom to the Radiator as well as an overflow hose on the top. Remove those bolts and pull up on the tank before you take off the bottom hose. Now have the new tank close while you remove the bottom hose, then quickly put the hose on the new tank. You can also use a pair of vice grips to pinch off the bottom hose so you don't lose too much coolant. I suggest you put a pan under the vehicle to catch the coolant that leaks out. Reverse procedure to re-install tank, making sure you get that push mount shaft into the right hole so the bolts will line up.

Overflow tank appears to be leaking as I find fluid on the ground. the truck doesn't overheat or warm hot. how difficult is it to remove the overflow tank?

Before removing the overflow tank check:-
1) the pressure cap is of correct specification and serviceable,
2) the overflow tank is not over-filled- space most be allowed for normal expansion of coolant.
The overflow tank should not be difficult to remove if it is necessary.
