P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description Article by Dale Toalston ASE Certified Technician Transmission Control System TCS Malfunction What does that mean? Many vehicles have a control module for the automatic transmission called a transmission control module (TCM). The engine control module (ECM) communicates with the TCM to monitor the automatic transmission for faults. If the TCM detects a fault in the automatic transmission and sets a transmission related fault code, the ECM is informed of this also and sets a P0700 in the ECM memory. This illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to let the driver know there is a problem. If this code is present and the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is illuminated that basically means there is at least one transmission code set in the TCM's memory. P0700 is an informational code only. It doesn't point to a direct fault in the engine, only a general fault in the transmission. More diagnosis is necessary to identify what the transmission fault is. This requires a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission module. Symptoms Symptoms of a P0700 DTC may include: Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination The transmission may exhibit drivability problems like slipping, etc. Causes More often then not, the cause of this code is that there is a transmission problem of some kind. The TCM detected the problem and set a code. P0700 means that a fault code is stored in the TCM. However this doesn't rule out the possibility of a failed PCM or TCM (unlikely). Possible Solutions For a P0700 the only real solution is to acquire a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission control module. Extracting this code from the TCM will be the first step in repairing the fault in the transmission. If the TCM compatible scan tool will not communicate with the Transmission Control Module then that is a good indication that there may be a fault with the TCM itself. Tip

I get code p0700 after an OBDII scan.

P0700 Transmition Control system is the transmission control module.
The transmission control module is a separate computer module, you need to read codes stored on transmission control module.

If there are no transmission code stored, then there is a bad Transmission Control Module (TCM) ground circuit or a bad TCM. In that case the ground to TCM must be tested, and TCM eventually replaced.

Faults that can cause troubles when shifting from first to second gear are : transmission fluid, speed sensor, TPS, transmission shift solenoid, gear box problem, TCM, neutral switch, torque converter problem.

The best thing to do is scanning TCM codes.

Tip

My car does not shift in second gear.

Hi.

The first thing to do is replacing the transmission fluid. Metal debris inside the transmission box gets mixed with fluid and can cause similar problems.

The automatic transmission uses throttle position sensor to determine position and opening of throttle.
IF throttle position sensor is defective, the car may have problems shifting into one or more gears.

The automatic transmission is controlled by an electronic control module, that is energizing a set of solenoids to shift into gears.
The control module is a rectangular box, often located behind the dash and wired to transmission. The solenoids are attached to valve body, inside transmission.

If a solenoid is defective, or if control module is defective, the car may have problems shifting into one or more gears.

Problems concerning transmission control module, TPS and transmission solenoid are usually detectable reading fault codes stored on the car main control module (ECU/ECM).

Transmission problems are often returning a code p0700 after an OBDII scan.

Stored codes can be retrieved using an OBD scan reader.
If the car auto transmission is not shifting into gear, talk to the mechanic about the problem.
Only when the car has a really high mileage, or when there is a factory problem there is need to replace the gearbox.
A damaged gear box at low mileage is rather unusual.

Both error codes you have are transmission related. P0736 is an error for reverse has wrong gear ratio. P0700 is a general transmission problem code

When shift indicator light blinks off transmission miss shifts

The light indicates a fault has occurred in the transmission or the electronic control sensors and actuators. You need the dealer to scan the transmission control module (TCM) to see what fault code is stored and then based on that code perform diagnostics and repair the transmission.

P0700 code for a 04 volvo s60

Symptoms of a P0700 DTC may include:
1. Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination
2. The transmission may exhibit drivability problems like slipping, etc.

Causes: More often then not, the cause of this code is that there is a transmission problem of some kind. The TCM detected the problem and set a code. P0700 means that a fault code is stored in the TCM. However this doesn't rule out the possibility of a failed PCM or TCM (unlikely).

Possible Solutions: For a P0700 the only real solution is to acquire a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission control module. Extracting this code from the TCM will be the first step in repairing the fault in the transmission. If the TCM compatible scan tool will not communicate with the Transmission Control Module then that is a good indication that there may be a fault with the TCM itself.

Engin light goes on, will not shift after 3000x rpm, need to disconnect battery for at least 4-5 hours to clear code and van drive better untllight tus back on...

Whats happening is a code is being stored which puts the car in what is called limp mode.. This protects components from being damaged..
You will need to get the code to begin diagnosing this.

Disconnecting the battery only clears the code.

As soon as the code reappears the shifting issues will start again.
