m,aybe so but it is an electronic part and any bit could be preventing it from operating properly. Replacing it with a know good unit will prove whether it is good or not.

SOURCE: Type of transmission oil for 2001 VW PASSAT

the trans fluid can only be serviced through a standpipe in the pan with car in the air and trans at an exact temp,<needs to be on a monitor computer> it also uses special fluid not any of the normal fluids. this fluid is suposed to be "lifetime" fluid that doesn't need servicing unless there is a leak or a trans failure.

SOURCE: I have an internal transmission problem in my 2001 Odyssey.

My wife and I are just resolving this same problem. You need to request a copy of Honda Service Bulletin # 02-062 which is titled "warranty extension: Accord, Odyssey, and Prelude Automatic Transmission. The warranty is for 7 years nine months or 109,000 miles. You are with in both of those aspects. Your dealer should have informed you of this and your transmission is should be completely covered with a replacement that should have an additional 1 year of warranty and 12,000 more miles. I took this issue to Honda America direct and they are in the processing of re-imbursing me for the cost of our transimssion repair.

Unfortunately this is not uncommon and I hate to tell people bad news but the problem is in the transmission. It sounds like the reverse is not locking in like it should. There is a pin inside the transmission that is supposed to lock it in place when you shift to reverse but that may have rounded off or seared off which would cause your problem. A clogged filter will also cause this issue. If you had that transmission back flushed, the normal method used today by shops that cost around $140 or so, then I can tell you for a fact that it needs to be rebuilt.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems.

2001 vw Passat auto, n reverse, any help

Two things can happen here. First, does the car seem sluggish on take off? If so, the the low/reverse band has broken(no first gear either). If you think or know you have first gear, then the reverse clutches are burnt or a sprag has broken. either way you have to remove the transmission and disassemble it. Best left to a technician. Many small parts in it that have to go back in the right play. Easy to loose one also. Springs and such.

I have a 99 VW Passat 1.8 and a few days ago and I left my light on over night. Got a jump but the guy reversed the lead on the jumper cables. Immediately afterwards I found that the car no longer goes...

auto or manual?
Either way you need the box repairing or replacing, which ever is cheapest. Gearboxes are not for amateurs and VW are known for gearbox issues.
the battery thing is likely to be coincidental

1996 VW Passat GLS transmission shift problem

Like to make sure that your post says your car is a 1996 with only 38800 miles.
There were many recalls for your vehicle back then which may be the cause of your hard shifting. Are you the original owner ? If so, have you done any scheduled maintenance to it from the day you purchased it ?

Hope this helps
