SOURCE: My bmw 323i backfired after cleaning the throttle

sounds like you an idle arecontrol valve to me, wich by the way is the only thing that really needs cleaned, make sure the air boot is not torn on the smaller part going to that vlv it tears at the bend you will need a mirror to see if in the car still, also check the plug on the same vlv make sure it is plugged in all the way, also also check the connector on the throttle itself the white arrows must be aligned and touching let me know what you find

Hello Tom,

A dirty throttle body will produce your described symptoms.

A can of carb cleaner should sort that out or eliminate the throttle body as the source of the problem.

Here's a general video on cleaning a throttle body:

suggestion is to remove tps again as iirc it kind of fits slightly off kilter to where the throttle body sits if you know what I mean

I have to pump the gas petal on my 87 bmw to get it started but runs good afterwards

This may be as simple as a dirty throttle body plate, remove the intake air hose to throttle body and clean the plate, it may be dirty not allowing enough air in at start up and when you open the throttle it lets air in and the other thing may be a bad idle air control valve that is stuck closed.

What would make engine idle up and down, timing belt?

more than likely the throttle body and idle speed control valve are sludged up, clean them with a spray can of throttle body cleaner from any good parts store like NAPA or Carquest.

I got a 1542 code on my bmw

p1542 Pedal Position Sensor Electrical.
Clean the throttle body really good.
In your case, check to see of the throttle butterfly (plate) is obstructed and then adjust the cable at the throttle body end per your manual specs. The adjustment is fairly simple. Otherwise.... I think it is getting to be new throttle body time.

2001 BMW 740iL is sputtering when I accelarate and shaky when idl

A tune-up and throttle body clean-up is a good idea, but mind you on those cars, the valve covers usually leak into the spark plugs and coils, causing the car to misfire. If you are replacing the plugs and find them soaked in oil; replace your valve cover gaskets or you will be back to the same problem soon after the oil soaks the new plugs back up again.

Automatic choke is stuck on my bmw

the 318 is fuel injected and has no automatic choke,it does have a cold start system to aid in cold starts, the most likely cause of your problem is a bad or dirty throttle position sensor.you may also need to clean the throttle body and throttle linkages or cables

I have a 2000 Chrysler Sebring that wont idle. The car starts and will run only if I step on the gas pedal.

clean the IAC. Use spray carb cleaner and spray the idle air control valve. It is on the throttle body near the throttle plate. It may have become stuck with deposits.

Clean the throttle body as well. Check for vacuum leaks
