Can I reset my Check Engine light by disconnecting my battery and then re-connecting it?

Yes but why !

You loose all the I/M Monitors that ran & all
data & possibly some shift strategy & relearns

Forget it-- unless you know you repaired something
& tested the new parts

If you clear codes or check lights, you can't
find the problems to diagnose & repair.

If your going to remove a battery cable, you need
to know if you loose radio codes or if the car will
even start,every vehicle is different.

You don't clear a check light after making a repair, unless
they are ones that have to be cleared after you road test
to confirm a repair.

If you have a check light or MIL Lamp on, you have OBD 2 System
Faults to work on.

SOURCE: How do I reset my Check Engine Light?

you could go to an auto parts store and they can reset it for you, or you could pull your battery cables off the battery and hold them together for about 10 sec. that will clear any codes.

SOURCE: Check engine light is on and nothing is wrong

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. The list of possible codes number in the hundreds. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what engine parameter is out of normal range. Even if you reset the light, if the underlying problem is not addressed it will come back on. If you want to reset the light don't disconnect the battery cable, find a buddy with a code reader.

After engine bay was washed the engine check light came on how do i remove the fault

You can try resetting the main computer by just disconnecting the battery and let it sit for 10 minutes with no battery, connect the battery back and that should reset all sensor lights. If that doesn't work check all sensor connections, that power wash could of disconnected the Map sensor or other cirtical connections attached to other sensors in the engine compartment.
Worse case scenario is that the bay wash could of pushed or flushed some debris into that Map sensor housing and is now clogged up, a simple cleaning with a special spary cleaner for Map sensors could make the check engine light turn off.

How reset check engine light

The easiest way to reset a check engine light on almost any modern car is to disconnect the battery wait five minutes and connect it back up. This will not tell you why the check engine light came on. For that you need a ODBII scanner, but if the issue was a gas cap left off and you have fixed that, then check engine the light should go off. I have found that many auto parts stores will read your car's ODBII codes for free.

Reset check engine light

Check Engine Light can be reset by disconnecting the battery terminal and and putting it back again. Make sure you have the code for the radio before you disconnect the battery terminal as the radio can get locked. You can get the radio code from any dealer.
Another way to rest the check engine light is by using an error code checking meter. You will have to purchase one.
It is always better to first get it checked from a mechanic for the reason of the light to come on before you reset the light as it might be an indication of a serious engine issue.

Service light reset

Disconnect negative battery terminal for a few moments, then re-connect, the light will clear. However the light will come back on if it was tripped by a bad sensor. Replace bad part then reset battery.
