SOURCE: 2000 kia sephia constant engine stalling!!!

try this procedure and let me know if it cures the problem.

Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Car is stalling and jerking then runs fine

There should be a trouble code or codes stored in the engine computer. A hand held scanner could retrieve them-go to Autozone for a free scan service. The codes indicate to a mechanic where to start looking-whether it is a fuel, or air, or ignition spark delivery problem.
Things that should be checked are the air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, check fuel pressure, check for air obstructions into the engine (like a dirty throttle body inside-sometimes a cause of stalling), check for vacuum or air leaks that let unmetered air into the engine. There is an ideal ratio of gas to air mixture that the computer is always trying to achieve. When it does, the engine runs fine and gas mileage is optimum. This is why it is important to keep up with regular maintenance and service. Get the codes to see if the computer is doing what it does best, better even than an old mechanic with a good ear.

I have what I consider a strange problem. I have blow back on my air intake from time to time. My car is a 1991 BMW 750iL 12 cylinder. The car has been in storage for about 5 years. Ran great before...

Valve stuck open from time to time
Lets keep in mind your talking a 1991
sitting for a few years or not.
Do a cylinder leak down test.
What was the reason the mechanic gave you ?

Stalls when stopped at a light

Do you have more information? Such as, does it do this every single time you are stopped? Does it ever happen when you aren't quite at a complete stop? How soon does it stall after stopping at the light (right when it's completely stopped? As you apply the gas to move again?)?

Mainly a vehicle will stall do to a problem relating to the fuel/air system. Specifying any 'special conditions' (very hot, very cold, etc.) when the stalling seems to be more prone to happening (if any) will help with a diagnosis.

It could possibly be a bad/faulty fuel pump, where the engine isn't getting the proper flow of gas (in a case like yours, it would most likely be an intermittent flow).

Also, a faulty throttle positioning sensor (TPS) could be the problem. These are a somewhat 'run of the mill' problem in vehicles in general and aren't overly expensive to replace. This is even more likely the problem if your vehicle stalls when you are taking off from the stop light. This isn't difficult to test yourself and there was plenty of directions to do so online and elsewhere.

A vacuum leak is another possibility. Another symptom of this can be a high idle (higher than usual for your vehicle at least).

Lastly, I wouldn't imagine this to be very common but it's worth a look, and i only mention it because it was the problem with my '87 Celebrity that suddenly stalled at a stop light, then kept stalling whenever i pressed the gas to move. The car had a known engine oil leak, one area of which it effected being the air filter housing (old-fashioned circular one). I noticed, once i finally got moving (albeit only for a short time before stalling again) it sounded as though the engine wasn't getting enough air. Even though i had just recently replaced the air filter, i checked it and found it was completely covered with dirty engine oil. I took out the dirty air filter and it solved it. It just hadn't been letting enough air through. So, simple solution though not commonly the case. No harm in checking anyways.

Good luck.

Here are a couple of guesses for things to check: vacuum leak (low vacuum pressure), worn distributor cap or rotor, incorrect timing, clogged fuel injectors, malfunctioning fuel pump (low fuel pressure), ignition module on its way out. I hope these suggestions help you out.

Engine Dies in Idel

being a certified mechanic has its advantages. there are multiple causes for that problem: lack of air or lack of fuel.
make sure the air filter is mostly clean.
check throttle plate (where air filter tube goes into motor), most likely black with soot and carbon. clean with tooth brush and gas, wipe off with clean rag. repeat ultil CLEAN.
low air flow past plate when closed (idle) will cause stall condition.
dirty throttle body is a common problem with lots of cars. causes engine stall.

dirty fuel filter will also cause this problem.. low fuel pressure at idle.

I also believe that your car is equipped with an idle air control valve. (regulates a bypassed air flow to motor at idle) this valve may be stopped up or non-functional. have local shop take a look, but there are ways to check valve if you consider yourself mechanically inclined

Yes your snorkel should have the right size for air to come-in, hope you have the right diameter, but snorkels will not seriously affect your vehicle substantially.
It could be that your fuel system is dirty. I would go for having those carbs cleaned but before you do this, I would advise you to clean your gasoline tank of rusts, water then blow those fuel lines with air to declog, change your fuel filters, if you do a lot of offroading, put two(2) fuel filters, first filter goes just above the gas tank, beside the chassis, the second will be place before your fuel pump, inside your engine compartment. have those fuel pumps cleaned too, check for leaks and moistures on your fuel hose and lines. if you have done all these, and nothing happened, check for strong sparks on your plugs, it could be that they ready fouled up.and check on your igniton coil,

Stalling when letting up on gas

Possible

1. Air filter, clean the air filter first and try it again, if it is the air filter cause this problem and get a new one put in.

2. check your oil cover cap, see if there are some white steam bubbling mixed with oil, if it is, maybe either the head gas kit or the block leaking, also check your coolant level. sometime you will see oil in your radiator. means the block is leaking

Hope this can help a little bit

3. Cooling fan doesn’t function right and cause over heat.

4. How many miles on this car?

I wish I can be there for you, let discuss this
