In the cowl in front of the windwhield

Posted on Apr 26, 2013

Testimonial: "Hi Dennis, I looked at cowl in front of the windshield too - shone the torch down there, couldn't see anything. There's a screw in the middle of the cowl - but to remove the cowl to get access is a huge job. Just thought that there should be someway of getting easy access. Thanks for getting back to me. cheers Maddy"

1997 S10 pickup. When i hit a hard bump front end shakes back and forth. can feel feedback thru the steering wheel with a rattle noise coming from the wheel.

You will need to jack up the front end of the truck and get a helper. Have your helper grab one wheel at the top and bottom (12 and 6 o'clock) and move it back ond forth. You will watch the upper and lower ball joints to see if there is any movement in the j the whole wheel assembly. If there is, they need to be replaced.
Next get your helper to grab the wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock position and move it again. This time you are lookng for movement in the tie rod ends the connect the 2 wheels to the steering. There are 2 tie rod ends on each side, an inner and an outer, check both for movement. Replace any that have movement.
Have your helper put some muscle into moving the wheel and look at the control arms for movement. You may need to replace the bushings where they connect to the frame.
If ,by chance, you have this truck jacked up and bigger tires, you should invest in stabilizer links for the steering. The Jeep thing known as "death wobble" is not exclusive to Jeeps. It applies to all short wheelbase vehicles like an S-10 or an S-15.

Power Steering Fluid Filling & Bleeding
  1. Repair the power steering system.
  2. Turn the engine OFF.
  3. Raise the vehicle so the front wheels are off the ground.
  4. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.
  5. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir to the FULL/COLD level and leave the cap off.
  6. Have an assistant watch the fluid in the reservoir while you turn the steering wheel fully to the right and fully to the left at least 20 times. NOTE: On systems with long return lines or fluid coolers, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock at least 40 times.
  7. Add fluid as needed to keep the fluid level at the FULL/COLD level.
  8. Install the reservoir cap and start the engine.
  9. Center the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  10. Run the engine for about 2 minutes.
  11. Turn the steering wheel in both directions and verify correct power steering operation.

Today, after fueling up my car - I went to start the engine and the key wouldn't turn in the ignition, the steering wheel wouldn't move and I couldn't push the brake pedal down. After trying several times...

if you turned the steering wheel after shutting off the engine and the steering wheel caught the lock and tried to turn back it would hold pressure against the ignition lock cylinder. if it happens again try pulling the steering wheel hard one way or the other and turn the key at the same time.

2. Either your steering shaft - relatively cheap and easy to replace - or the steering box - expensive and hard to replace - are at fault. How was your luck lately?

Study THe steering wheel look for Philips screw holes, that removes horn cover front, on back of steering wheel, once you take the front cover of the steering, do not loose any springs and screws, use the cars ashtray to collect parts, Looking at the front, You will see a NUT 22 mm or 19 mm grab a 1/2 pride bar with socket( with locked steering) anti clock wise loose nut and washer and remove them, after that tap steering wheel from back towards You with both hands at the same time, till wheel OFF, You will see the wiper control leveler and how to replace it

Steering wheel jumps along with clanking noise when wheel is turned hard.

jack up the front wheels one at a time, turn the steering wheel all the way to the right or left and turn the wheel by hand. i think you have a bad u-joint behind the front wheel(s). if you have a bad u-joint then the wheels won't turn smoothly.

good luck
