Question about 1980 Toyota Cressida 2.2
Trans slipping in reverse. Common problem? any fix besides rebuilding or replacing tranny?
Assuming fluid is in the hot marks and you have changed it often. reverse failure used to be the first sign that the trans is toast. " reverse is the first to go" was the motto back in the day. is it original trans? what is that 34 years old? its time for a rebuild.... even if its the second rebuild, its time

The problem is most likely internal. Sounds like it could be the synchronizer or maybe the gear itself. Hard to say until you take it apart and look at it. I guess a price range of around $1000-$1500 to rebuild, repair costs depend on what parts needed, cost of parts, labor/time involved.

my overdrive light is flashing due to a shattered speedo cable tip. check your fluid level. you may have to change the tranny filer and redo all the fluid.
