It is behind the dash, you also have one in the dash that takes the ambient temperature in the car and another black dome looking thing on the dash that calculates sun load.

Where is expansion valve located

The Expansion valve is located in the evaporator box

On this year Nissan it's not to bad of a job. The dash doesn't need to be removed like the newer cars.

  1. To replace the expansion valve, you will need to discharge the AC system. Remove the two AC lines from the evaporator.
  2. Then you will need to remove the glove box
  3. Then you will need to unbolt the evaporator box
  4. Tip it back and remove.
  5. Once you have the evaporator box removed, then you can replace the expansion valve. I would also clean the evaporator box as well since you will have it removed.

Our front ac is not working and back is cold in our 1999 GMC suburban, we tried putting freon and it didn't work

Dual zone front/rear ac systems have 2 evaporator cores. And 2 orifice tubes, which are just inline
filters. Either your front evaporator core or orifice tube is probably stopped up.

Sometimes you can get to the evaporator cores without removing them from the vehicle, and clean it.
Evaporator cores do get stopped up sometimes, because the blower motor pulls in air with dust and debris from outside, and the air is cooled when it passes through the evaporator core.

But evaporator cores are a nightmare to replace, you usually have to remove lots of stuff under the dash and lots of stuff under the hood to remove them.

Ac works fine for about a week then shows low refrigerat level and compressor off-- no sign of leaking . mechanic checjed dryer. compressor replaced sensor on inside of frame and checked control in dash

Sounds like you have a leak. Some leaks are not that easy to find. I would inject some U.V. dye in the system and check for leaks with a high intensity black light, this process has never failed me, Also you might have a leak in the evaporator which would be hard to see without taking the housing apart, which in most cases means removing the dash

How to replace ac evaporator coil

You need to discharge the system, remove the dash & if you don't know what you're doing don't do it. You need to drop the steering column & there's a special procedure to prevent damage to the clock spring for the air bag. If you get that far,you have to remove the entire heater box & completely disassemble it to replace the evaporator. Once re-assembled,you must recalibrate the blend door motors & properly recharge the system, another involved process. It takes 14hrs to do it in a shop,so you can imagine how long it will take for a novice,if you can do it.
